Since the beginning of the century, the thin sands beach of the shell shaped bay, attracts tourists. There is a little hotel, an apartments hotel, some residential and pensions, camping parks and guest houses. Many people from Lisbon come here for the weekend. The restaurants have many fish specialties and sea fruits specialties. There is a daily market (except Mondays). The terraces, cafes and bars are very inviting and relaxing. In July and August the place is lively with Portuguese holiday makers, most other times it is very quiet. The local beaches are wide and sandy and vary from heavy waves to safe shallow sand. The first King Afonso Henriques, gave this land to the Cister Monks in the XII century. They used it as sea port to transport wood form the pine forest of Leiria. This wood was also used to ship building. All across the bay, there’s Salir do Porto where in those years they extracted salt. The ruins of a medieval Customs House can still be visited.

Notes on accommodation
Equipped to a high standard throughout with comfortable beds and matching linen and curtains. Wardrodes in both bedrooms. Can park outside. Quiet elevated position but still only a few mins walk from all local facilities and the beach. Bay views from both floor front balconies of the apartment and from the pool gardens. South facing. Rear balcony views from both floors over quiet area and countryside.
Accessibility
Not suitable for the elderly or infirm as there are 2 and half flights of stairs from the rear entrance plus another flight if approaching from the beach

Coast/Beach
3 min walk to the bay of San Martinho Beach, other Atlantic coast beaches are within 15 mins drive north and south.
Golf
Praia Del Ray 20 mins away, one of the best courses in Europe.
Travel
San Martinho Bay has a very safe wide sweeping beach from where you can windsurf. Just over the hill and outside San Martinho Bay is Gralha beach, a very quiet secluded spot at the foot of the cliffs. There is a good coast road north and south to more excellent beaches. 10km south is Foz Arello which is a magnificent expanse of sand from where you can surf the Atlantic waves. 10km north is the fishing town of Nazare.
Distances
100km from Lisbon (1 hour), the nearest airport, or use Porto airport about 2 hours away. Car hire recommended for shorter stays. There is an express bus service from Lisbon to Sao Martinho. Half a mile taxi ride from airport to bus station. Bus costs approx euros 9.50 each way, takes 1 hour 30 minutes, about every 2 hours during the day only. Our agent would meet on arrival.
