Atlantic beaches with miles of white sand and good seafood lunches are within 1 hours drive. Plenty of choice in the guide books but Figera do Foz is probably nearest. Aveiro which is Portugal's Venice is a bit further North and worth a visit. There is also a good choice of lake and river swimming near by with much local investment being put in in the last two years to the development of river beaches and picnic areas. These are in the local information book provided.

Fly to either Lisbon or Oporto (Oporto is nearer) with a drive on the country’s A1 motorway to Condeixa and thence to Miranda do Corvo. Coimbra is half an hour away and is Portugal's oldest city it is known as the City of Knowledge. It has good shopping in the "Baixa" a maze of lanes with little shops, then lunch by the river to recover.

Other trips to consider include Conimbriga a very well preserved Roman City only 20 minutes drive away, here you can spend a couple of hours wandering around the huge site and follow it with lunch at their restaurant; Tomar where the Knights Templar built an amazing Castle/monastery on the hill top, again a spectacular place to spend a couple of hours wandering around and imagining the Knights Templar going to the chapel there on their horses! They have a delightly simple restaurant overlook orange groves; Bucaco Palace an exquisite example of Mauliene Arquitecture set in the ancient Forest, which has excellent walks, a military museum and the place where Wellington spent the night after the famous battle there, and also very good restaurant; Visit the Port houses at Porto; Or just enjoy the hill walking, bird watching (Eagles and Buzzards included) and local nature. Information about river swimming in some beautiful local settings we have found, is provided. A local guide book is constantly being updated as we find new and interesting places to visit. Miranda itself has a newly developed river beach and interval training circuit which is soon to open. Next to this is a well established riding stables. There is also a large very unpopulated indoor swimming pool in the town which is ideal during colder weather and costs 1 euro to get in.
