Gastronomy – there are many tasty cheeses to enjoy, some served with honey for starters with the homemade breads. The black pig ‘preto porco’ is an Alentejo speciality and the alfresco barbecued chicken ‘frango’ also has its own delicious flavour, especially with the house wines served by the jug in some restaurants and not expensive. If you like olives there are many varieties to try. Unlike the more expensive coastal areas food is very good value for money. You can buy wines in the supermarket for around 1.30 euros and less. A bottle of beer in a café is about 65 cents. A meal will cost about from about 4.50 euros upwards. The food is very fresh and usually cooked to order. Families are made very welcome and there are usually highchairs for the very young.
Local Activities – fishing, swimming, horse riding, local festas and feiras, bird watching, hiking, historic monuments. A recent bird enthusiast that stayed spotted azure winged magpie, white stork, calandra lark, crested lark, montagu harrier, red kite, black kite and bee eater from the cottage, but near Castro Verde he saw bustard, little bustard, stone curlew, thekla larks and red necked nightjars. This is an up and coming area and so at this moment in time it is not to expensive to explore and enjoy the local ambience.
The Baragem Da Monte Da Rocha is about 5km away and is a quiet place to fish or just sit around with a restaurant in the background to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat.Spring is a beautifull time to enjoy the wonderful wild flowers and warmth with summer bringing the long hazy day's to relax just anywhere you wish! Autumn also has it's own beauty and can be very hot at times for those of you who would like to extend your tanning time! We have wood burners for those who fancy a cosy winter in the Alentejo.
