Tavira Garden is a Scandinavian development begun in the mid 90’s. Set on a low hill looking out to sea over Tavira, it is an expressionist rendition of the medieval Moorish style. The lush, mature gardens boast an impressive array of palm trees, carob trees and ancient olive trees, set off by lovingly tended shrubs and flowers. The complex favours families and those seeking a relaxing location from which to enjoy the sun, sand and sights of the Algarve or the magnificent golf courses, hills and countryside! Disco bars and lager louts are in short supply! There are 4 pools (2 x adult and 2 x children), a comprehensively equipped gym (with a personal trainer for the masochists!), tennis court, a boules court offers a more genteel alternative. A bar and restaurant (off-season opening limited) ensures convenient wining and dining. Car rental is available on site (airport/apartment pick-up/drop-off) but many visitors opt to walk or taxi.

Changeover day
Preferred changeover day is Saturday but this is flexible. Check-in is normally 4pm. Arrival after 6pm attracts a service charge of €15/£11 rising to €25/£19 after 10.00pm. Check-out is 10.30am. Check-in and check-out time flexible if bookings permit.

Accommodation
Apt 15-1ºA (Duplex, Sleeps 4 to 6; 2-Bed, 2-Bath)
Off the entrance lobby are the dining room and the kitchen. From the lobby, steps lead down to the living room and up to the bedrooms. The living room and both bedrooms are air-conditioned; all windows have ‘blackout curtains’. Bed linen is provided and changed every 7 days when cleaning is also undertaken; towels are provided and changed every 3 to 4 days when bathrooms are also cleaned. At any time, additional changes and/or maid-service can be provided. The access area for the apartment is pedestrianised with ample safe parking close by. The complex grounds, the gardens and the common areas are well lit at night. Both the complex and the town of Tavira can be regarded as relatively safe/secure areas. A sturdy wall safe with 8-digit electronic combination (your choice) is provided. The living room has 2 couches (1 x 3 seater, 1 x 2 seater), stools, graceful standard lamps, occasional tables, prints, etc. Equipment includes Sat TV (BBC, ITV, etc), DVD, VCR, stereo, etc.

Apt 16-2ºA (next door; 2 Bed, 1-Bath; 4 to 6)
This is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 2nd floor apartment close to the pool area and to the gym. The covered area is approx 100sqm/1100sqft. There is a breakfast balcony off the living room overlooking the gardens; there is a large private roof terrace with panoramic views to sea, town, hills. The apartment is fully air-conditioned and can accommodate 4 to 6 people. The living area of the apartment is open plan with separate living room, dining room and kitchen areas. The entire floor area of the apartment is tiled. Living area and bedrooms are air-conditioned; with the exception of kitchen and bathroom, all windows are fitted with ‘blackout curtains’. Bed linen is provided and changed every 7 days when apartment is also cleaned; towels are provided and changed every 3 to 4 days when bathrooms are also cleaned. Additional changes and/or maid-service can be provided. The access area for the apartment is pedestrianised and well lit with ample safe parking close by.

Notes on accommodation
Prices are shown for parties of 2 and of 4. Sept to June, a party of three is charged at party of two rate plus 15%. Rates for July, Aug assume four guests. At any time a fifth and sixth guest may be accommodated in camp/sofa-bed or cot at a charge of £32 or €42 per week each.
Discount 5% for two weeks, 7,5% for three weeks or more.
"Early Bird" discount 5% if you book 2009 in 2008.
Possible 12,5% discount if you book 3 x 2009 weeks.
Electronic wall safe no charge. Additional change of bed linen €25 / £18. Both apartments are fully heated and air conditioned. All utilities (including heating, air/con, satellite TV etc) are included in the costs. Children are welcome, both in the apartments and in the complex generally. Smoking is limited to the balconies. Pets are sometimes allowed -- please enquire.
Service charges apply for late arrival -- €15/£11 from 18h01 to 22h00, €25/£19 from 22h01; note that, unlike Spain, local time in Portugal is the same as British Isles.

Accessibility
Both apartments should be OK except for people with less severe mobility problems. However, bear in mind that Apartment 16-2A is on the second floor and Apt 15-1A is a duplex (albeit with garden level entrance).

Outside
Tavira Garden has 4 pools (2 adult and 2 children). There are 2 children’s play areas. There is a comprehensively equipped gym (with a personal trainer for the masochists!) and a tennis court; a boules court offers a more genteel alternative. An on-site bar/restaurant (closed January) offers convenient and inexpensive wining and dining. While many opt to walk to the town centre (15 mins), a readily available and inexpensive (€4-€5/£3-£4 within the urban area) taxi service permits easy access to the many fine restaurants of Tavira centre. Car rental is available on the complex (airport/apartment pick-up and/or drop-off) if you want to visit Seville, explore the Guadiana valley, etc. Bicycle hire is also available in town. Note: Charges apply for tennis and gym.

Coast/Beach
The best beaches in the area are those of Ilha da Tavira, an island which stretches along the coast off Tavira and which is reached by various ferries or by means of a ‘toy’ train. The island has some 8m, 12km of white strands (even a remote nudist beach) and many restaurants, etc. The ferries and the train are €1 (2006) and 10 minutes.

Golf
Half a dozen courses lie within a 20 minute radius; Quinta da Cima, Quint da Ria, Benamor, Monte Rei, Castro Marim, Maragota while most of the well-known Algarve courses (and Islantilla, Isla da Canela, etc over the nearby Spanish border) are within a 1 hour drive. Benamor offers discounted rates to Tavira Garden residents and has an excellent lunch restaurant. The nearby Quinta da Cima course was listed as the best Portuguese course in 2004 by the prestigious Peugeot guide.

Special interest holidays
You can go horse riding, bird watching, cycling, wandering, etc in the Ria Formosa Nature Park which surrounds Tavira. Ilha da Tavira, with its 11km of white sands also has a remote, secluded nudist beach. The Guadiana River valley with its ancient walled towns is within half an hour's drive. You can drive through the valley or enjoy the sights from one of several cruise boats operating from Ayamonte. Apart from the Roman bridge, Tavira also has a wealth of well preserved archaeological sites from Moorish and medieval Christian times.

Travel
The nearest airports are Faro (30 mins, €40/£30 by taxi) or Seville (2 hours by car). Some people use Lisboa or Jerez which are 3 - 4 hours drive. Car use is optional, many renters opt to do without (or perhaps to rent for a few days to explore the surrounding countryside, go shopping in Seville, etc).

Distances
Tavira Garden is 10 mins from the motorway. Seville is a 90 mins drive, Lisbon 3 hours, Cape Saint Vincent (the western tip of the Algarve) 2 hours. Gibraltar is 4 hours. The Guadiana valley starts 30 mins away; Mertola is 60-90 mins. There is also an excellent train service along the entire Algarve coast (Tavira to Faro is ~€3 or £2) and to Lisbon (~€30 first class).

Further details
Tavira, a live fishing port, offers fish as a specialty in its many inexpensive restaurants.
June to September, the local Camara (Town Hall) organises, street theatre, music sessions, exhibitions, etc.
The town abounds in architectural relics of its Roman, Moorish and medieval Christian history.
For the shopaholics, there are so many temptations this is a place to be avoided.
More importantly, Tavira has managed largely to avoid the disco bars and lager louts which plague many of the resorts of the Western Algarve. This makes it ideal for family holidays (but your teenagers may not approve!).
