Accessibility
Situated by the mouth of the river Alcantarilha, It is believed that the Romans had a military base here to protect those living along the river. Little remains of the base now, but old salt tanks used by the Romans to preserve fish have been found on the beach. When the Romans left, their settlement petered out, people preferred to live further up-river at what today, is Pera. Their main livlihood was still fishing.

Outside
The balcony overlooks the ocean and you are 30 paces from the beach. Table, chairs and loungers are on the spacious balcony looking directly onto the sea. This first floor apartment is above a coffee shop which can do meals to take upstairs if you do not want to cook.
Although it is a lively beach side position you have double glazing to ensure peaceful sleep. A car is not needed for this holiday apartment. However if you have one we provide a garage space.

Coast/Beach
30 paces to the clean sandy beaches of Armacao de Pera. You can take your own chair and parasol or you can hire them daily during the summer season. There are many water sports available from the beach. There is also a nudist section to the long seven mile beach. There are many beach cafes. In the mid 19th century fishermen built houses at Armacao and developed commercial activities, including boat building, fish processing and rope and sail making.

Golf
You have 5 golf courses within easy reach. If you hire a car you also have a car parking space in the underground carpark of the apartment.

We are about 38 km from Faro Airport. We can arrange transfer, for approx 40 euros, one way. Car hire is not necessary for your beach holiday but, should you wish to hire, this can be done two doors from the apartment. There are coaches to the local attractions which can be booked from the tourist office nearby. Buses to Albufeira and Carvoeiro, our neighbouring towns, can be caught from the various bus stops. There are coach trips to markets and local attractions and we have a Saturday Market.

Further details
Armacao de Pera has many beach cafes, and interesting restaurants. During the 19th century in the warren of narrow streets and alleys the young or old - male or female were employed in keeping the boats at sea to catch fish, especially tuna. There is still a strong fishing presence today. Many of the narrow streets and alleys remain with names bearing witness to the activities they housed. Street of the fishing nets, Street of Sails, Street of candles and lamps. Wandering through them it is easy to imagine life more than a century ago. The decline of the tuna stocks coincided with the emergence of tourism in the 1960s attracted by the spectacular expanse of golden sands. The Hotel Garbe (nearby to the apartment) was the first to be built here. It stood alone with no other development in sight. Today Armacao has 4,000 permanent residents and summer tourists swell the number.Beach goers are in their element in the summer, boat trips from the beach weave in and out of the sea caves and pillars of rock, viewing the spectacular cliffs to the West. There are many good inexpensive restaurants particularly - of course - those specialising in fish.
in 1661 a fort was built at Armacao to provide protection from pirates and other invaders. Named after the local patron saint, Antonio da Pedra, local fishermen felt safe enough to settle below it's walls. The original entrance remains. The old coat of Arms is visable over the doorway and on the other side towards the sea the original flagstones are still in place.
Just West of the village a tiny chapel Nossa da Rocha (Our lady of the rocks) perches on a promontory. Unusually shaped and very old it was built by the fishermen to commemorate a sighting of the Virgin Mary on this spot. Another unusal chapel is at the side of the parish church in Alcantarilha, inland from Armacao. Open to visitors the contents are somewhat macabre, the walls and ceilings consist of tightly packed limb bones and skulls of 1,500 former parishioners.
