The Tapada do Falcćo estate is situated in 130 acres of woodland and pastureland about 8km south of the town of Portalegre close to the Sao Mamede Natural Park and the Spanish border. The area is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Portugal and a haven for many of Europe's rarest birds and animals. The cottage is the original property on the estate and is around 300 years old. It lies some 500m up a track off the drive to the main house, and is totally hidden from view. In recent years it has been sympathetically renovated and furnished with traditional hand painted furniture. It abounds in rustic charm and has wonderful views from its terrace. It may be let separately or in conjunction with the larger Tapada do Falcao (see property Ref P210).

Outside
Immediately outside the front door is a patio from which you can look across a green valley towards the estate's vineyard, with the hills of the Natural Park beyond. It is incredibly peaceful and beautiful. There is a huge restored bread oven and a small portable barbecue. The cottage sits on its own surrounded by olive trees and cork oaks. Indigenous shrubs and flowers flourish in their natural state. Back towards the main house is a tennis court with bang board which guests can share with occupants of the main house by arrangement.
Travel
The nearest airport is Lisbon. The drive from the airport is relatively straightforward and mainly on empty motorways. It will take around 2 hours.
Alternatively it is possible to take the ferry from the UK to Santander or Bilbao and drive, which takes approximately 8/9 hours.
Car hire is essential.
Distances
The cottage is about 800 kms from the local village where you will find a shop, restaurant and bar. Portalegre, the nearest main town, is 5 miles away and has a good selection of supermarkets and eating and drinking places. The Sao Mamede Natural Park is easily accessible and here there are walking trails and an abundance of unusual flora and fauna. The spectacular mediaeval hilltop village of Marvao is one of many places to explore.
Further details
We have 5 adult mountain bikes available for hire plus a variety of children's bikes. We also have some tennis racquets available for hire if you do not want to bring your own.
Generally you should come to the area if you want to step back in time and discover a totally unspoilt rural way of life. There are walks to be taken through beautiful scenery with some of Europe's rarest birds and animals to be glimpsed. There are many castles and historic sights to be seen and some good shopping to be done in the larger towns and over the border in Spain.
The caretaker and his wife and son live in a cottage on the estate. He is on hand to sort out any problems that may arise, and his wife will babysit and clean by arrangement locally. Joćo, their son, speaks perfect English.

A deposit of 1/3 of the total rental is due on booking and the balance is required 8 weeks before departure.
