The Tapada do Falcão estate is situated in 130 acres of woodland and pastureland about 8km south of the town of Portalegre close to the São Mamede Natural Park and the Spanish border. The area is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Portugal and a haven for many of Europe’s rarest birds and animals. The property boasts 2 pools for the exclusive use of the guests, a tennis court, full size trampoline, stunning views and wonderful gardens with numerous terraces for outdoor eating. It is perfect for single families, 2 or 3 families wanting to holiday together, or a group of friends or family wanting to share a special occasion such as a birthday party or wedding anniversary. For parties of up to 21 it may be let in conjunction with our cottage, Casa do Outeiro, which sleeps up to 5 (property ref. P211) and is located on the same estate. Extra bed and breakfast accommodation is available locally for the really big bash!

Central heating available for additional daily charge, payable locally. Free logs for fires. Cots and high chair are available for no extra charge.
Outside
The house is situated in 130 acres, much of which is wild, with eucalyptus, cork oaks and pine trees in abundance. Indigenous shrubs and flowers flourish in their natural state and the landscape features extensive granite outcrops. There is a large area of more formal lawn and garden to the rear of the house, approached via the terrace from which are wonderful views towards the hills of the Natural Park and the medieval village of Alegrete. The house has 2 pools: the original 8m pool is the central feature in a walled garden close to the house and is unusual in that it has terracotta tiles and not blue, on the bottom. The larger 14m pool is 80m away from the main house surrounded by lawns and terrace. There is ample pool furniture and umbrellas for this pool and a changing room and shower/wc adjacent. There is also a tennis court with bang board and a full sized trampoline. A 6 hectare vineyard was planted in 2000.
Travel
The nearest airport is Lisbon. The drive from the airport is relatively straightforward and mainly on empty motorways. It will take around 2 hours.
Alternatively it is possible to take the ferry from the UK to Santander or Bilbao and drive, which takes approximately 8/9 hours.
Car hire is essential.
Distances
The property is situated on the edge of a village which has a local shop, bar and restaurant. Portalegre, the nearest main town, is about 5 miles away and has a good selection of supermarkets and further bars and restaurants. The Sao Mamede Natural Park is also about 5 miles away where one can walk and enjoy fascinating flora and fauna. A little further afield are many interesting villages often with hilltop fortifications, including the dramatic mediaeval hilltop village of Marvao.
Further details
We have 5 adult mountain bikes available for hire plus a variety of children’s bikes. We also have some tennis racquets available for hire if you do not want to bring your own.
Generally you should come to the area if you want to step back in time and discover a totally unspoilt rural way of life. There are walks to be taken through beautiful scenery with some of Europe’s rarest birds and animals to be glimpsed. There are many castles and historic sights to be seen and some good shopping to be done in the larger towns and over the border in Spain.
The caretaker and his wife and son live in a cottage on the estate. He is on hand to sort out any problems that may arise, and his wife will babysit and clean by arrangement locally. João, their son, speaks perfect English.
Booking notes
A deposit of 1/3 of the total rental is due on booking and the balance is required 8 weeks before departure.

House swap considered - must sleep 5 in at least 3 bedrooms and be of a very high standard.
