Casa do Leão, set in its secluded garden, about an hours drive from Lisbon, this sympathetically restored 300 year old house is an excellent base from which to explore the nearby castles and palaces of historic Sintra. At the top of the picturesque and unspoilt village of Penedo, our cheerful, spacious house has lovely sea and mountain views from most windows. Interesting walks are right on the doorstep and the nearest beach is just 10 minutes away by car.

Notes on accommodation
Electric night storage radiators in most rooms, open fire, portable electric heaters. A computer is available for guest use with wireless broadband Internet access. Off season the house is heated by means of electric night storage radiators supplemented by a glass fronted fire for extra cosy evenings, with dehumidifiers for use when necessary. Pets are allowed.

Safe parking right outside main gate, walled garden (both gates are lockable), patios with sea views, barbecue, tables and chairs, sunshades, maintained pool (approximately 24ft x 13ft kidney-shaped) shaded by an olive tree.

Coast/Beach
The nearest (and nicest) beach is approximately 10 minutes drive away.

Golf
There are several golf courses nearby at Quinta da Marinha, Penha Longa and Estoril.

Travel
Lisbon airport is approximately 45 minutes by car.
Car hire essential for eating out otherwise cheap local taxi service.

Distances
Casa do Leão is tucked into a hillside overlooking the idyllic village of Penedo, north-west of Lisbon (about 50 minutes by car with a frequent train service from Sintra or Cascais). The picturesque town of Sintra is 20 minutes drive and Cascais/Estoril are about 25 minutes away.

Further details
Despite its rural location, Penedo offers easy access to several motorways (Lisbon, Oporto, and the Algarve).

The house survived the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and has undergone major improvement work. It was once owned by a famous Portuguese interior designer who added many attractive features, such as antique tile skirting boards. The dining and sitting rooms both have French windows leading out into the garden which is interestingly set out on several levels offering a variety of places to sit and eat or read with marvellous views over the sea and mountains.

The village is just 5 minutes drive from the well-known wine centre of Colares, and the trip down to the nearest beach at Praia d'Adraga is less than 10 minutes. Many other beaches, both small and large such as Praia Grande and Guincho (marvellous for wind surfing), are easily reached by car. There is a freshwater swimming pool & tennis courts at Praia das Maçãs (10 minutes drive). Motor racing enthusiasts are within easy reach of the Estoril Grand Prix Circuit which is close to one of many excellent shopping centres (CascaiShopping). Penedo is in the heart of the Sintra National Park area which offers a tempting selection of palaces, monasteries and castles to explore in addition to some wonderful walks (and cycle rides) in and around Penedo.

The nearest shop to Casa do Leão is a 5 minute walk away and the nearest large supermarket is in Sintra, 20 minutes away by car. Small self-service food shops abound (the nearest is a 5 minute walk) and stay open till around 8.00pm. There are dozens of excellent restaurants, bars and cafes in the locality and the nightlife of Estoril and Cascais is less than a 30 minute drive away. Being an easy journey away by car or train, Lisbon makes a fascinating day out for both shopping and culture; in the evening it richly deserves its reputation as one of Europe's most exciting nightspots! Booking notes
A 30% non-refundable deposit is required (in the form of a bank transfer) at the time of booking. Full payment (also by bank transfer) must be received 8 weeks before the rental begins. In July and August rentals should be for a minimum of 2 weeks.
