Casa de Fontainho a granite style farmhouse originally built in 1810 is situated in the North of Portugal in the Minho region and is nestled in the Peneda / Gerêz National Park in the village of Fontainho, Cabril, a lovely isolated place, sits on the Rio Cabril and surrounded on all sides by majestic mountains. The farmhouse is beside a quiet country lane and is surrounded by well farmed fields of maize, potatoes and other well tendered crops. The village of Fontainho only consists of a few granite farmhouses. Nearby in Cabril with its beautiful Salamonde reservoir (great for trout fishing) offers places to eat, a mini-market, local church and a few cafés. A daily bread van will pass the farmhouse and twice weekly the fruit & vegetable, fishmongers and grocerys. The best drinking water can be obtained from a natural well known as the corga within walking distance.

Our farmhouse has been recently renovated, still keeping the granite stone walls on the interior, wooden floors and ceilings, thus keeping the cold out in the winter and keeps the house cool in the summer. |

Maid service is provided once a week. Towels and bed linen included. Can you kindly take your own towels for use outside or at the river or lake. |

Outside
Outside is Small enclosed garden with a Granite table and bench for eating al fresco. A Portable BBQ for those tasty grills and a traditional wash tank with fresh water running from the natural mountain springs above. Plenty of countryside to amble or hike along. Special natural pools dotted along the river for swimming. Also swimming is allowed in the reservoir.
Coast/Beach
Nearest man made beach is in Apulia approx. 90 mins by car. Dotted along the reservoir, specially man made beaches to swim and sunbathe from.
Travel
The nearest airport is Oporto. From Oporto there is a very good motorway to Braga. From Braga to Cabril the road is well signed.
We recommend hiring a car as there is almost no public transport in this part of Portugal.
Distances
The village of Cabril is 10 minutes walking distance from the farmhouse. The In the North, there are many places of interest to visit. Oporto, famous for its Port & wines, take a boat down the Douro valley. Braga known as the Religious Capital of Portugal, visit the famous cathedral of Bom Jesus with its monumental staircase. Guimarães the birthplace of Afonso Henriques. Montalegre, Chaves & Gerêz, any of these places would make interesting exploration of this little known corner of the Minho.
Further details
Cabril/ Fontainho flaunts odd attempts at modernity, though its center is still sauntered through by oxen, goats and flocks of sheep. Wild horses roam freely in the mountains, wolves, hares, rabbits, deer, eagles and wild boar can be spotted at a distance. Access to the mountains either by foot or car. Trout fishing, canoeing, hiking, bird watching and riding are available in Cabril. Water sports are available nearby on the Caniçada lake in Gêrez. Golf is available at the Ponta da Lima Golf Course. Ideal location to perfect your Portuguese.
