Golf
The closest golf course to the house is Colina Verde, 9 holes and is only a 5 minute drive away. There are 7 main golf courses, all 18 holes, on the Eastern Algarve. Benamor and the 2 Quintas (Ria and Cima) are the most popular and can be reached within 30 minutes. The prestigious new course of Monte Rei designed by Jack Nicklaus now has its first 18 holes open and is continuing in its development to the second phase offering the height of golfing luxury - although a costly experience, this is a real treat for golfing fanatics wishing to experience a little high life! Travelling only 10kms further on towards Spain, the challenging course of Castro Marim, along with its famous country club comes highly recommended and just across the border are the Costa Esuri and Quinta do Vale courses now growing in popularity.
Travel
20 mins to Faro Airport and 5 mins from Junction 15 of the IP1, which leads directly to the Spanish border in 30 mins. Car hire is essential.

A short drive from the house takes you to Olhao waterfront where you can find all kinds of restaurants including traditional Portuguese, Indian, Chinese, Italian, pizza and tapas. Also a McDonalds is close by! In Olhao there is a brand new shopping complex (Ria shopping) it has 80 small shops a large supermarket, restaurants/bars and a cinema. Local Portuguese shops sell traditional bread and for fresh fish, meat and veg are the daily markets. Banks and cashpoints are available as well as a post office, chemist and newspaper shops. Olhao also has a new Auditorium. There is a free Internet cafe. Olhao camp site has an outdoor pool, tennis and tabletop games and bikes for hire. Faro by train or bus is a great day out with its ancient wall and own harbour and lots of things to see and do. Spain is a 30 minute drive away and is reached by bridge or ferry across the river Guadiana. Also organised boat trips from San Antonio Villa Real up the Guadiana to Alcoutim is a lovely day out.
Faro, the capital of the Algarve is a great place to visit for its history, particularly attractive is the old part of the city still surrounded by the Roman walls. It is the home to the city's archaeological museum. The "Golden" church contains the Macabre Spectacle of a chapel lined with the bones of 1,200 monks! Walk through the quaint streets and in shops, traditional and old or simply while away the day relaxing in the cafes/bars. Down at the harbour there is always the hustle and bustle of the boats and the occasional fisherman.
Tavira is 12 km away. It is an ancient town with a Phoenician, Roman and Moorish part and has a castle, over 35 churches and a superb arch Roman bridge. On both sides of the river 'Gilao' you can find good shopping for fresh produce, pottery, basket ware and handicrafts. There are lots of organised tours including a trip around Tavira on the tourist train or horse and carriage.
