The House of the Fountain is situated in a quiet, friendly neighbourhood in the old fortified town of Asilah. Restored in 2008 it offers a taste of traditional Moroccan living combined with contemporary comforts. Asilah is an attractive, lively coastal town, with a celebrated Festival every summer. Asilah is small enough to become familiar but large enough to provide plenty of variety. The Medina is packed with small shops, including the communal bakery where you can get your bread, or even your meals, to be cooked for a few dirham. There is very little hassle and most shopkeepers love to pass the time of day with visitors. Asilah has a railway station (quite rare) and is connected to Tangier in the north and Marrakesh in the south. Taxis are cheap and can be hired by the day for excursions to quiet beaches, the Rif mountains, Tangier and other destinations. To reach Asilah fly to Tangier, or cross from Tarifa or Algeciras, an onward taxi will cost about 250 dirham.

Stainless steel fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, large oven with hob and spit, microwave. Plenty of cupboard space. Crockery, cutlery, pans etc provided. Dining room with large table.
No utility room.
Large entrance salon with fountain, large sofa and chaise lounge. Traditional salon with Moroccan sofas. TV with satellite, DVD player. CD/cassette player. Sofas can be used for additional sleeping accommodation.
Towels/linen included, changed weekly. House cared for by Moroccan couple, will be cleaned for guests arrival. Extra cleaning can be arranged, as can cooking and other services (at guests expense). Guests can be met in Tangier or on arrival at house.
Washing Machine, Oven, Microwave, Iron, Hob/Stove, Fridge/Freezer, Dishwasher.
The property is probably not suitable for those with mobility problems because of the staircases and lack of access to a wc (the downstairs door is narrow).
There is a spacious tiled roof terrace with chairs and a table. Plants are grown in traditional clay pots. The terrace is a simple open space where you can relax and enjoy the sun in relative privacy.
Important notes on accommodation
There is a large fireplace in the salon for chilly winter nights, also electric heaters. There are duvets for the beds and hot water bottles (just in case!). The house is naturally cool in summer and catches pleasant sea breezes. Fans are provided. There are two fairly steep staircases which very young children might find difficult.

Notes on prices
Prices are for the property per night in euros. Minimum let of two nights. For stays of more than 1 week a discount may be available, depending on the length of stay. Long winter lets - please contact owners for prices.
Arrival and departure days and times can generally be flexible.
Bookings can be made via email after confirming availability with the owners. A 50% deposit will be required on booking, a % refund will be made if the booking is cancelled, but not within two weeks of start of the holiday. The balance should be paid in euros on arrival to the house manager. He will give you your keys and show you around the house.
About the area
There is a town beach which can be easily walked to. Paradise Beach (well named) is a short taxi ride away. The Atlantic beaches tend to be wilder than the Mediterranean and at present there are miles of unspoilt sandy beaches to enjoy along the whole coast.
There are golf courses near to Tangiers.
How to get there
The nearest airport or ferry port is Tangier. There are sea crossings from Tarifa and Algeciras, and flights from most European countries. Taxis to Asilah from Tangier take about 45 minutes and cost about 250 dirham (c12 dirham to the £ or euro). Car hire can be arranged locally or we can arrange for a hire car to meet you at the airport. Asilah itself can easily be walked around and taxis are very affordable for shorter trips.
Asilah is 42km SW of Tangier, about an hour travel time should be allowed. Apart from the medina and souks visits can be made to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. A visit to Tetouan or Chefchaouen in the Rif mountains might take a couple of hours travel time. The Neolithic stone circle at M'Soura lies 27km SE of Asilah. Larache and the Roman ruins of Lixus (according to legend where one of the labours of Hercules took place) are about an hour from Asilah.
Asilah has an endless supply of small shops selling everything you could possibly need, and some things you probably don't. English is spoken a little, a knowledge of French or Spanish is more helpful but you can get a long way with a smile and mime! Places to eat range from expensive, but good, fish restaurants to small street stalls where you can eat just as well in slightly less grand surroundings. Alcohol is generally not available, except at the expensive restaurants, but there are two 'bottle stores' where you can buy wine and beer for drinking at home. Mint tea can be found everywhere. Fresh bread and delicious pastries are always available. The tap water is fine to drink but visitors should probably stick to bottled water. The major banks of Morocco are represented in the town and cash can be withdrawn using European bank cards through the ATMs. There are also several bureaus de change.

We live in Launceston, Cornwall. We have had a couple of holiday properties over the years and always aim to create places which we would be happy to stay at ourselves. We love staying at the House of the Fountain and we hope you will too.

Why this location?
When we first thought about buying a place in Morocco we were living in Andalucia. It was easy to get to Asilah and we wanted to have somewhere by the sea to escape from the scorching heat of southern Spain. Asilah is a lovely town, the coast is stunning, the people are friendly and helpful and it's very easy to reach from Tangier. The Spanish influence in the architecture makes it feel familiar while still providing an exciting taste of north Africa. We have visited many times (although not often enough) and can still spend endless time just wandering around, enjoying the simple pleasures of this delightful town.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
The house feels very private and welcoming, an oasis of peace and calm. The trickle of the fountain, the sunlight coming through the coloured glass windows or the light cast by the colourful lanterns at night, the call of the muezzin, the decorative ironwork and painted doors and furniture, all contribute to the feeling that you really are in Morocco.
