Dar El Menia lies in the heart of Fes (Fez) Medina, former imperial capital of Morocco and the world's largest medieval medina. Fes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site but it is not a museum, it is a living, breathing city and Dar El Menia provides the perfect base to begin exploring the old and the new. This dar, or courtyard house, is at least 250yrs old and has recently been completely restored using local craftsmen, techniques and materials. Situated adjacent to Talaa Kebira, the main artery of the walled city, Dar El Menia offers easy access to all major sites of interest, the water clock, tanneries, hammams, mosques and medersas as well as being perfectly placed to begin roaming the medina's narrow car free streets, which contain all manor of crafts, markets, restaurants, cafés and personality. This fully restored dar is focused around its traditional courtyard, which with its original marble floor, patterned tiles (zellig) and plaster carving, provides natural air con.

Further details
Café and restaurants. There are two local cafes 2 minutes walk from Dar El Menia where you can buy Moroccan coffee and mint tea. There are a large number of cafes and restaurants at Bab Boujloud, about a ten minute walk taking a left up Talaa Kebira – good for a cheap lunch or an evening meal. There are a number of fantastic traditional Moroccan restaurants throughout the Medina – consult your guide books.

Bab Boujloud - Ten minute's walk from Dar El Menia stands the massive gate of Bab Boujloud. Considered the main entry to the Medina this beautiful and impressive bab or gate is blue on one side and green on the other. The door, however, is not the original. The original is not nearly as impressive, but it still exists to the left of the new one. The nearest ATM machine to Dar El Menia is just outside the gate.

The Water Clock - Less than five minute's walk from Dar El Menia is the Water Clock opposite the Bou Inania Medersa which in itself is well worth a visit. There are 12 windows under which there used to be 13 copper bowls. The inequality of bowls to windows shows that at the time of its use, this water clock measured "unequal hours". This means that it measured hours by the length of the day, and not in equal 60 minute intervals. Using a complicated system whose details still remain a mystery, the bowls filled up with water at a speed that would change daily. When a bowl filled up, a weight would drop and open up one of the small doors. If one door was open, it was one o'clock. If two were open, it was two o'clock, and so on.

Supermarkets - Acima is the nearest supermarket situated in the new town/Ville Nouvelle. Walk to Bab Boujloud or the Ain Azliten car park and hail a petite taxi it will cost 12 to 15dh (£1/1.50 euro) and take about 15 minutes. You can buy just about everything there including alcohol.

Booking notes
All payments to be made by pay-pal - 40% non refundable deposit to secure the room/house let, the remainder to be paid via pay-pal prior to arrival.

Guest comments
We stayed at Dar El Menia for 9 days - and it was just perfect! The owner gave us a lot of information before arriving in Fes which was extremely helpful and transportation was arranged and was very prompt. Fortunately, we had the whole house to ourselves and it was the perfect escape after exploring the chaotic medina. The Riad is beautifully restored and the zellij and stucco works are of the highest standard. We ate every night on the terrace with Umm Khoultoum cooking traditional Morroccan cuisine of huge proportions - (delicious & better than any of the restaurants in the medina - and just what you need after a busy day) The location of the Riad is just perfect, it is off one of the main roads (making it very easy not to get lost) and five minute walk from the car park so hailing a taxi is not difficult. By the end of our stay we felt like family - Communicating through a medley of English, French and Arabic - Moustapha, Umm Khoulthoum and Hicham treated us so well.
