Coast/Beach
The beach is just 3 mins walk away, with a pleasant cafe at one end, and plenty of shade from trees. The water is very clear, and has the advantage of being salty and wave-free, great for keeping you afloat, or teaching children to swim. Budva, on the Adriatic, with all its seaside trappings (fast food, music, crowds) is about 40 mins drive.
Travel
The nearest airport for daily flights from the UK is Dubrovnik - approx 90 minutes away by car. The route is very scenic and straightforward, and a good introduction to Montenegro. Tivat airport is nearer, and there are direct flights from the UK three times a week. Hiring a car is useful for getting around; however, there is a very regular 'bus service between Kotor and Herceg Novi, which stops very close to the apartment and pick-ups can be arranged from the airport.
Distances
Kotor, a UNESCO world heritage site, is approx 15 minutes drive. A medieval walled city, its car-free streets and squares are great to wander round. For the energetic, there's the ring of Kotor, the fortifications that straddle the mountain behind. Perast, next to Orahovac, has beautiful stone houses and palaces, and in the summer there are regular boat trips out to the churches on two nearby islands. The excellent Stari Mlini restaurant is very near.
Further details
There are two small shops in Orahovac - great for stocking up on basics and ice creams - which appear to be open all hours. The Kum cafe serves very tasty local dishes, and the beach cafe does drinks and light snacks. For full meals, the Amfora Hotel overlooking the beach, is very pleasant. There are several supermarkets on the road to Kotor - where you can find banks, cash machines, a wide range of cafes and restaurants, souvenirs, and a good local produce market. Further afield, the national parks and especially the Tara Canyon, are well worth a visit, with superb views from the mountain roads. And there are plenty of beautiful walks around Orahovac itself.

We particularly liked swimming in the sea, hanging about in the beach bars, exploring Kotor, and climbing the hill paths around Orahovac. We found the military remains in Crkvice above Risan most interesting. The kids went on a banana boat several times and we all visited the Lady of the Rock at Perast. Montenegro is a fascinating and beautiful country with huge appeal and potential."
