Well cleaned and prepared, well greeted by Louise, and very nice everything - furniture, layout, very spacious, awesome view - it feels a bit like staying on/in a relaxed tourist attraction with the tiny fishing harbour, wave surfing, waterfall and levada right behind or in front. A minor snafu was the wifi didn't work, when I was there. I am told, it works now.

"Fabulous - highly recommended!"
We stayed in top floor Apartment of The Docks with our two children aged 7 and 5, for a week at the beginning of the Easter holidays, and had a fabulous time. The building has been completely refurbished only recently and has been done very tastefully, and to a very high standard. The main rooms were spacious (our apartment had high ceilings too), beautifully furnished and were topped of by great direct sea views all round. The bathroom is large too, and had an excellent shower. We had everything we needed and couldn't fault it in anyway. As other reviewers have noted, car hire is essential, as Paul do Mar itself doesn't have many places to eat and is not otherwise accessible. We found driving around the island pretty straightforward, although we had been upgraded to quite a decent car which helped for some of the steeper parts! The village is nice though, and you can walk quite a long way along the seafront promenade - there's a bar at the far end called the Maktub, which apparently has large reggae gigs sometimes, but was just a small friendly bar when we were there! We ate out mainly in Calheta, Jardim do Mar, and Prazeres, all of which are a reasonably short drive from the apartment. Madeira is well known for it's walks and levadas, and we managed to do four of these during our week, together with the children. One of these is very close to the The Docks next to a waterfall, up a steep cliff face to Prazeres. We'd assumed it would be too difficult for our 5 year old, but he was adamant that he wanted to try and sure enough managed to go both up to the top, and back down, with a stop for lunch in between. After that, the other walks seemed pretty easy.... In summary we had a great time, and loved the apartment. Highly recommended!

"Stunning views, tranquility and relaxation"
We booked a week's stay at The Docks based on the excellent reviews we'd read and I'm pleased to say our high expectations were definitely met. The lovely owner Louise was there to meet us in person as soon as we arrived at the airport to give us the keys, printed directions and a very handy carton of milk. Driving in Madeira takes a little getting used to, with very steep hills and long tunnels - worth spending a little extra on a car with a bit of va va voom! By the time we arrived at The Docks, it was dark. The first 'wow' moment was when we stepped inside and saw the classy decor, beautiful furniture and luxurious kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms complete with original stone feature walls. Everything has been designed and built to a superb standard and we knew we'd be able to make ourselves very comfortable here. The second 'wow' moment was in the morning when we drew back the curtains. The view of the sea and sound of the waves crashing was breathtaking. That's when we knew we'd made the right decision to base ourselves in an area that's slightly off the beaten track, not commercial or full of tourists, but just peaceful and relaxing. Wherever we went during our stay, we always looked forward to getting back to the Docks afterwards to unwind, usually with a glass of wine on the terrace looking out towards the sea, with the sun setting behind the iconic statue of the fisherman. The morning routine for us involved a long run along the shore at Paul do Mar watching the surfers riding the waves. By the time we got back to The Docks the bread van would usually be there with fresh croissants for our breakfast. The kitchen at The Docks is well equipped and the open plan layout makes it a joy to cook and be social. Paul do Mar is still an unspoilt fishing village with a couple of local bars and snack bars for visiting surfers. Having a car is a must and the nearest place with a choice of restaurants is Calheta which is about a 10 minute drive away. There's also a sandy beach, a harbour and a supermarket there. Funchal is about 45 minutes drive away (the locals can make it there in 30 mins, but no chance of that in our low budget hire car!). We had apartment no.2 (the middle one) which was just perfect, complete privacy and not too many steps to climb to reach the front door. There's not much activity going on in the evenings at Paul do Mar, so we were glad we'd bought some films to watch on the DVD player that's there. We hope to be back!
