Notes on accommodation
Calhau Grande is accessed through electronic security gates (although security is not an issue!) and there is a parking space for each holiday home. The Gouveia family are always available for advice or help.
Outside
The swimming pool is 9x5 meters approximately. In summer ,the water temperature is between 22º and 28º and in the winter between 13º and 20º degrees. The private space belonging to the garden is ample enough to allow one to make the best unbroken contact with nature, especially allowing you to enjoy the pure air, the agricultural sounds and sun. There is a well with permanent running water with fish and frogs.
Coast/Beach
Calhau Grande is located in Arco da Calheta, 5 minutes by car, to the yellow sand beach. Near the beach, we will also find the supermarket, sme shops, bank, restaurants, coffees ad a promenade for an evening walk. To drive to the mountains it takes about 15 minutes by car. From our house you can easily reach to any part of the island very fast. Calhau Grande has an excellent strategic position to discover Madeira - so close to the mountain as well as near to the sea.

Travel
Leaving the airport, follow the expressway in the direction of Funchal - Ribeira Brava - Ponta do Sol - Arco da Calheta. There is a roundabout, follow the direction Ledo. Turn left onto "Rocha de Gouveia" Street. 1 km ahead on your right, there is a sign stating "Calhau Grande", which points the way to the car park of the cottages. Coordinates: Latitude: 32º 43' 0.76" N, Longitude: 17º 9' 30.87" W.
Distances
Vila da Calheta = 5 minutes. Mountains (Rabacal) = 15 minutes. Loreto = 5 minutes.
Further details
Calhau Grande is located on the west side of the Island of Madeira, in the town of Calheta, in the village of Arco da Calheta. The name of the village was given to it because of the configuration of the surrounding mountains and its proximity relative to the village of Calheta. It is about 45km from the airport (45 min) and 30km from Funchal (30 mins). It has a 180º view over the Atlantic and is excellently located, close to the sea (7 mins from Calheta Beach) and mountains (15 mins from Rabacal), where you can easily explore the maritime coast, the levadas, the mountains and the Laurissilva forests, through scenic passages by car, de motorbike, bicycle or by foot.
Booking notes
The reserve will only be considered definite (booked) after the receipt of a deposit (20% of the total stay amount) by bank transfer which should be made promptly after confirmation of availability. Calhau Grande has no responsibility on deposits made without confirmation first. If the transfer is not made within five working days, the reserve will have no effect.The remaining 80% of the total price of the stay is paid when checking in, in cash.
Guest comments
Only a week for a quick trip. Get up early to catch the plane (four o´clock in the morning, aarghhh!). Spent two days in Funchal - City Life - and the rest here, in Calheta. A lovely restored cottage house, and worm welcome from a woman bringing us fresh fruit - Eva. We did a lot of walks - Levadas (anyone is OK) and the alternative route to Pico do Areeiro (Don't try this at home!!!). If you haven´t tried Bananas, Espada and Espetada, you haven´t really been to Madeira. Enjoy!Thanks for the fun&hospitality Eva, Eleutério & Petrrro.

I live in Arco da Calheta with my family. I really live my island and i think that is a very calm and place to live. ;) I like a lot he mountains and also respect the environment.
Why the owner chose a home in this location
Calhau Grande sarted being our holiday house. My parents and us always lived and studied in Funchal and every weekend and holidays we went to Calheta, Calhau Grande.
Here we could relax, recharge batteries, work a bit on the gardens, just enjoying the silence of the nature.
It is a really good place to spend time, it is around 30 minutes from Funchal or any part of the island. It is close to the mountais.
Here we have calm, quiet, silence, green... but if we need to go somewhere else, we can go fast and confortable by the new roads thar links us to the rest of the island.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is around minutes from the Calheta beach. For those who enjoy walking, 15 minutes from here there is a very beautiful Levada called Rabaçal - 25 Fontes - Risco. Here you will get in contact with the heart of the forest.
Madeira´s food is really good. In the surroundings, there are good restaurants who prepare fantastic dishes. If you are looking for great food in the comfort of the house, there is a private barbecue outside just for you, where you can cook yourself some fresh fish, like "Espada". When you arrive, i will be around to give you some tips! ;)
