You can see old houses in Madeirense traditional style, acquired by the current proprietor in 1995 and reconstructed, by the owner, in 1997 and 2004. The construction was renewed in accordance with the models of the region, with local rock, carefully constructed, in order to protect the surrounding ecology, tracing its original, the harmony and the integration in the landscape. Casa do Calhau Grande with a panoramic view of 180º on the Atlantic, fits in the natural, country environment, in perfect harmony with the typical rustic look of the region, and provides a calm, healthy stay of great pleasure.

Accessed over its own little wooden bridge. Tenda is a one bedroom apartment which has its own kitchenette. Living room with satellite TV, radio and CD/MP3 playback A brand-new and tastefully furnished bathroom. A large balcony. Its crowning glory, however, is its floor-to-ceiling opening glass wall at the front which gives unbelievable views to the sea - even while lying in bed! To sit on Tenda's balcony enjoying a meal with a glass of Madeiran wine is an experience to be savoured. |

Casa do Calhau is the perfect place for a small family with private entrance. It welcomes 4 people as standard and 1 more a supplement. This house has two floors. On the ground floor there is one big ample sitting room made by wood and stone and an equipped kitchen. On the first floor there are two bedrooms (one has two single beds and other has one double bed and a balcony). Living room with satellite TV, radio and CD player. Outside, there is a private BBQ and garden. |

Notes on accommodation
The properties are accessed through electronic security gates (although security is not an issue!) and there is a parking space for each holiday home. The Gouveia family are always available for advice or help. We recommend that children, between 2-8 years old, must be always controlled by their parents, because this place has stairs, swimming pool and some balconies in X! But is exactly the height of this little complex is what makes it so spectacular.
Accessibility
We would advise that this is not an ideal place for someone who has difficulty in negotiating steps or who has problems with heights.
Outside
The swimming pool is 9x5m approx. It was constructed specifically to integrate into the surrounding countryside and the geographic location, offers excellent privacy. The temperature of the water is the same as the surrounding natural temperature. In the Summer, it varies between 22 and 28 degrees and in the Winter between 14 and 22 degrees. All occupants have the share of the swimming pool with sun loungers and gardens. Swimming in the pool, 300m high, is an experience in itself. At pool level, looking south, all you can see are blue skies and the deep blue ocean. The private space belonging to the garden is ample enough to allow one to make the best of broken contact with nature, especially allowing you to enjoy the pure air, the agricultural sounds and sun. Plants and the existing flowers are those that the climate favours and those that are better adapted to the place, such as: banana trees, palms, yam, cardinal, cacti, jasmine and daisies.

Travel
Leaving the airport, take the express road passing Funchal towards Arco da Calheta. In Arco da Calheta, you will find one first rotund and you exit of it on the first exit that will take you to a second rotund. You will exit on the second exit (direction - Ledo). You will find a crossroad and you will turn left. You will find, in your right side, a bar called ‘Bar Massapez’. 200 meters after that bar, you will find a street that goes up to Casa do Calhau Grande.
Further details
Casa do Calhau Grande is located on the west side of the Island of Madeira, in the town of Calheta, in the village of Arco da Calheta. The name of the village was given to it because of the configuration of the surrounding mountains and its proximity relative to the village of Calheta. It is about 45km from the airport (45 min) and 30km from Funchal (30 mins). It has a 180º view over the Atlantic and is excellently located, close to the sea (7 mins from Calheta Beach) and mountains (15 mins from Rabaçal), where you can easily explore the maritime coast, the levadas, the mountains and the Laurissilva forests, through scenic passages by car, de motorbike, bicycle or by foot.
Booking notes
Casa do Calhau Grande will inform you by e-mail, the availability and confirmation of your request as well as all the conditions of the reservation. The reservation will only be considered definite after the reception of a deposit (20% of the full payment) by bank transfer which should be made after confirmation of availability from Casa do Calhau Grande. If the transfer is not made within five days, the reservation will be cancelled. The remaining 80% is paid when checking in, in cash.
