Our beautiful stone house is just 25 minutes drive from Funchal on excellent roads. Our friend and agent Ezekiel will show you where the house is and can arrange transport from the airport if you prefer. As you approach the property there is a car parking area. The road level accesses the bedrooms so you don't have to heave luggage up and down stairs. A spiral staircase leads to the living accommodation and pool etc but there is also a straight staircase beside the house. The kitchen has a hob unit and combi-microwave, as well as kettle etc. There is also a dishwasher. For cooking outside there is a brick barbecue. Satellite TV and DVD player are installed. New this summer is access to unlimited wireless broadband. There is a garden below the pool level which contains the Casa da Madeira (wooden house). If the owners are there during your stay they may use the swimming pool. Just 10 mins drive away you will find the only sandy beach in Madeira. You should visit just to see the sunset.

Outside
The property is on 3 levels. The road level is the bedrooms where there is a large balcony (only accessible from the rooms). On the second level the living room opens out onto a covered patio with the pool. The pool is approx 5m x 8m and 1.5m deep with steps to get in or out. It is now heated by solar panels. There is a large tiled area round the pool and a simple pool shower. There are wooden benches along the side, 2 loungers and a table with 4 chairs. Below this there is a garden with mature avacado and custard apple trees. You are welcome to pick the fruit for yourselves in December/January when they are ripe. The garden will eventually contain a variety of fruit trees.
Coast/Beach
There are no natural beaches in Madeira but one has been created only 10 mins drive away. The rocky beaches are great for snorkelling or scuba diving. The fish are wonderful and the waters clear. The beach and marina at Calheta is less than ten minutes drive. The marina offers private hire deep sea fishing.
Travel
Funchal is the only airport on the island and it is approx. 45 mins from the house. We recommend hiring a car at the airport but keep it small. Once off the main roads Madeira roads are narrow.
Distances
The house is in the village of Arco da Calheta, only 25 minutes drive to Funchal and all it offers. It is a great location for walkers.
Further details
Arco da Calheta is a very attractive village which has a social centre, cafes and a number of small supermarkets which sell everything you need. The locals reckon that Arco da Calheta has the best micro-climate of all! Its a quiet location in the centre of the village. The village is on a hill over-looking the ocean and with views of the surrounding cliffs and mountains. The hill/mountain to the left of the house is famed as an international paragliding place. The village boasts a new leisure centre and children's play park. The Calheta Beach Hotel which is down by the beach has a spa which the public can use and there is a leisure centre, banks and restaurants in Estreito da Calheta which is only 10 minutes drive from the house. Driving towards Funchal you will find Madelena do Mar where there are restaurants and bars and a rocky beach. Further on is Ribeira Brava, with another rocky beach. There is also a small market, a large supermarket, banks and a number of restaurants.
Booking notes
You will be asked to transfer the deposit and balance to our bank either in Madeira or in the UK. Half the total price will be paid on booking and the remainder six weeks before the rental takes place. The deposit is non returnable. Please make sure your travel insurance covers cancellations as no refunds are given. Our agent Ezekiel will meet you with the keys.
Guest comments
"We stayed in this cottage for New Year 2008/9. The cottage is in a lovely position overlooking the sea and away from all the crowds whilst in a residential area. Funchal is less than 45 minutes away by car and Calhetta Beach is delightful. Madeira is a beautiful island so a car is necessary to really explore it. I agree with the other review that a small car makes life easier with regards the last part of the journey to the house. The bedrooms are very comfortable with lots of bedlinen and towels available. The terrace and patio were fabulous even though we didn't have the best weather and the downstairs area was nicely set out and the kitchen well resourced. The pool was glorious! The whole house is very clean. There are local shops and a pharmacy within walking distance. Ezeikel was extremely helpful even though we arrived late on a Saturday night. I hope that we will be able to return for another visit in the near future."
Owner profile
About the owner
Geoff and Carole Dische live in North West London. They have been visiting Madeira since 1989. When Carole retired in 2006 they purchased the Casa da Pedra because they wanted to spend more time there. Geoff still works as a software engineer, so not as many holidays as Carole would like. However that means we are able to share it with you. They are lucky to have good neighbours and Teresa looks after the house getting it ready for visitors.
Year purchased: 2006
