Casa das Videiras

Casa das Videiras lies in the picturesque village of Seixal. The village is an agricultural and fishing village. It has the most charming people, natural and hospitable, and they are not yet run over with the tourist trade. Still you can find several good local restaurants and bars near the house. Try the fish specialities, and do not forget the local vine. The typical Madeira vine can be a bit strong, so be careful with the number of glasses. The name Casa das Videiras is named after the vine plant. The Main house is from the 19th century and rebuilt in the 1990. This was a neat local home which had almost fallen into ruins. It was restored and amplified with tree bed rooms and luxury living areas. It is decorated with a mixture of Portuguese style and inspirations and artefacts from the owners’ life in Norway, India, the Middle East. The kitchen is well equipped.

Owner profile

About the owner
My name I Johnny Bjelkaroy. I was borne half a century ago in Bergen, Norway, but after jumping a bit around the world, I settled down here in Madeira Island about 26 years ago. I am a dentist by profession, but I also enjoy being able to accommodate guests to our beautiful island with the weather and climate of an eternal springtime. I live in Funchal, the capital of the island of Madeira, Portugal.

Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
Looking for times far gone, I bought this house as a ruin about 17 years ago. At that time I wanted to get a holiday/weekend hiding away from the city. The old ruin in Seixal was in the middle of the village, near the sea, but also not far from the mountain. It had been a typical Madeiran home, and it needed a lot of restoring to be done. A leaking roof, a low ceiling ground floor and thick solid stone walls was the thing that I bought. The ground was not too big, and there were local neighbours all around. Some have asked me why did I not by a house further away from other people, just out in the nature? In Seixal the village people are concerning, friendly, helpful and the kind of people that is disappearing from the modern world. This give safety in a world going mad.

Unique benefits of the property
The charm of going back in time, listen to the sea and still having an excellent comfort is why I go to Seixal.
