The garden apartment at Casa Aniversario has stunning views across the garden, over the rooftops of the village and to the ocean beyond. The one bedroom apartment was the original old palheiro house - on top of which sits our house! The apartment is stylish, functional and benefits from a wonderful pool. The property is built on 4 terraces, so there are steps up to the apartment from the car parking and steps from the apartment up to the pool. The car park is big enough for three vehicles. Casa Aniversario is located close to the centre of the village of Arco da Calheta. Arco has a church, a small chapel, a library and several cafe/bars. Within walking distance there is a mini-mercado, a bakery and several small cafes and a Pizza restaurant - take-aways can be ordered here too.

Notes on prices
We have two simple to remember prices: Peak Seasons €300, off peak seasons, €250 these prices are for one couple sharing. We do not charge simgle supplements, we do not charge for exit cleaning, we do not ask for a breakages deposit. However, if a third adult is staying we do charge an additional €50 per week.
Changeover day
We are totally flexible as to change over days. If there is a you shaped space we try to accommodate you.
| Bedrooms: | A stylish and comfortable double bedroom with Victorian bed of standard double size. There is a large futon/sofa, a TV with Astra 2 satellite channels plus a collection of DVDs to watch. |
| Bathrooms: | The bathroom is 'wet-room' style with a powerful shower, a toilet and a sink. We provide towels for every possible use; shower, pool and beach. |
| Kitchen: | The kitchenette is located at one end of the sitting room and has a microwave oven, a four ring hob, toaster, kettle and George Foreman grill. The refrigerator is retro gorgeous and is big enough for all the cold beer you will need! |
| Living Rooms: | The sitting room has a front wall of glass - looking out across the garden. It is made comfortable with two large chairs, large coffee table (also for putting feet on!) and cushions. |

We make sure you have best quality cotton bedlinen and towels for every occasion! Towels for the shower room, towels for the pool and we even make sure you have towels for the beach! We change linen and towels every week. |

Notes on accommodation
We will negotiate children and pets! There is a radiator for the Winter months, although it is rarely needed. We have no air-conditioning but we have a fan for the bedroom that might be needed in August - the walls of the bedroom are almost a metre thick and the room remains a constant temperature all year round within one or two degrees.
Accessibility
It is perhaps not suitable for lively 2-5 year olds and at the other end of the demographic curve not suitable for the very elderly (unless super-fit) and/or the infirm. Wheelchairs users, I am afraid would not be able to negotiate the steps unaided.
Outside
Outside of the apartment is a barbecue grill, a table and two chairs. Well designed and placed for alfresco eating! The swimming pool is fabulous - 10 x 5m and one depth all over of 1.5 metres. It is excellent for just splashing around or for more determined swimming exercise.
Coast/Beach
Calheta yellow sand beaches are just 10 minutes drive away. It is an easy walk down to the coast but it is steep going and you might need a taxi to make the return journey. The island capital, Funchal is a 30 minute drive away. Funchal has lots of visitor attractions, gardens, cable cars, museums, cafes and restaurants. The harbour is a great place to just watch!
Golf
There are two golf courses in North Funchal- about a 35 minutes drive East from Arco da Calheta. There is a new golf course being constructed in Ponta da Pargo, again about 25-35 minutes drive West of Arco.
Travel
Funchal airport is located just East of the city and takes about 35-45 minutes to drive to us. We would recommend hiring a car for your holiday and to do that online from your home - hiring online here can incur delays and direct hire in our experience is charged at a premium.
Distances
The fast road that almost circumvents the island can be accessed in less than 5 minutes form the apartment. Very near to Arco da Calheta are the levadas water systems where you can hop on and walk for miles. The most westerly point, Ponta da Pargo is a short drive, where the views north along the coast are just stunning. The drop down to the sea is dizzying but the crashing of the surf onto the boulders turns the sea an oxygenated, turquoise blue. It is so worth a trip to peek over the edge!
Further details
Whale watching boats go off hunting from Calheta marina twice a day. Game fishing boats can be chartered from Calheta marina - please ask and we will give you contact details.
The insane can leap of the top of Arco da Calheta and paraglide to the beaches below! Again, please ask and we will furnish you with details.
Booking notes
We can accept payment by credit card via Paypal, even if you have no Paypal account. It is quick, easy (great instructions from PP) and it means if you live outside of the Euro-zone you don't get mugged by the banks with exchange charges. You get charged the commercial rate on the day and no transfer fee.
The prices charged are based on one couple sharing. We charge 50€ per week for every extra grown up to a maximum of three adults in total.

About the owner
Peter and Jane Chappell. In his former life Peter worked as a manager for a construction/civil engineering company. Jane was an IT manager. Come and join us for a week or so - share the good-life.

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
We didn't really buy the house, we bought the view! It truly was a case of location, location, location. The house is on a wiggly little local street, off the main hill in the village. We are surrounded by local people living ordinary lives. It is really interesting watching a still agri/rural community living their day-to-lives .... the seasons accompanied by local Festivals. The Church bells ring in the births, marriages and passing of the villagers - they celebrate everything as a whole community but never more than at the "Fiesta do Flores", when everybody turns out to build a "floral carpet" around the perimeter of the entire village. The men women and children all gather and spread the plants and flowers that make the carpet. It is a metaphor that illustrates Arco da Calheta.
Unique benefits of the property
Casa Aniversario is within easy walking distance of the mini-mercado (little supermarket), a Pizzaria, a cafe offering "Prato do Dia" (plate of the day ... a very economical way to eat!) and several bars and coffee houses. There is not a better view in Arco da Calheta. The house is so placed in the centre of the "arc", the ancient bowl of the now extinct volcano funnel, to give a perfect view over the terracota roof-tops to the church and it's clock tower and beyond to a panoramic spread of the Atlantic ocean.
