These two cottages were renovated in 2004 to offer spacious accommodation with traditional Madeiran charm. Situated in lawned gardens with a shared sun terrace and splash pool, they have beautiful views over the ocean and the surrounding village of Arco da Calheta. Accessed from a levada pathway, each cottage comprises a sitting room with sofa bed, dining and kitchen area (one with original bread oven), plus shower room and double or twin bedroom with dressing room. Each cottage also has its own BBQ terrace. The cottages can be rented together to provide a perfect self-catering holiday retreat for groups and families of up to 8 adults and 2 children people.

Notes on prices
Prices are for two people in the property per week in UK pounds, each extra adult is £30 to £40 per week according to season.
Changeover day
Changeover days are flexible. The property is available from 3pm on arrival day and we ask you to vacate the property by 10am.

Garden Cottage (1 Bedroom, Sleeps 2/4)

| This simple rustic cottage was refurbished in 2006 to provide an open plan sitting room, with seating for 4 including a sofa bed and a fireplace for winter evenings, a kitchen area and shower room downstairs with a charming attic bedroom upstairs. The simple kitchen though adequate for holiday purposes with a double hob unit, fridge-freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle is not equipped for keen 'foodies'. The large attic with twin beds and a second double sofa bed makes an ideal family suite. The partly shaded dining terrace in front of the cottage, with a traditional Madeiran wood-fired barbeque, opens onto its own private garden area. This house is provided with Wi-Fi. | |
Notes on accommodation
The Wine Lodge annexe was once an adega where the family's wine was stored with sleeping accommodation above - so there is no internal staircase. The bedroom has been refurbished and an en-suite shower room fitted to provide additional sleeping accommodation for two that can be rented as an annexe to either Wisteria House or Garden Cottage. It cannot be rented on its own as it has no kitchen facilities or living room, however it does have its own terrace and Madeiran wood-fired BBQ.
Accessibility
None of the properties is suitable for the disabled as the access involves a levada path and steps.
Outside
Set within a secluded garden the cottages share a sun terrace and a small unheated pool. Each cottage also has its own barbeque terrace.
Coast/Beach
The white sandy beach at Calheta is only 5 minutes away by car, where there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, banks, the marina and a supermarket. The gently shelving white sands are ideal for the youngest of bathers while the deep game fishing based at the marina will satisfy the more adventurous.
Golf
Two good golf courses are located near Funchal. The Palheiro Golf Club is about a 45 minute drive from Arco and a bit further at 1 hour 15 minutes is the Santo da Serra Golf Club, the home of the Madeira Open and now included in the European PGA Tour.
Travel
The recent road, tunnel and bridge developments on Madeira make for an easy 30 minute journey to Funchal or 50 minutes to the airport.
Distances
The nearby towns and villages on the south coast, Ribeira Brava (15 minutes drive) or Jardim do Mar (5 minutes) - make an interesting change from either the dramatic north coastal attractions at Santana (1.5 hours) Porto Moniz (1 hour) or Sao Vincente (1 hour) or the mountainous interior of Pico Arreiro (1.5 hours) or Paul da Serra (30 minutes).
Further details
Wisteria House and Garden Cottage are in the village of Arco da Calheta on the south coast of Madeira, within a few minutes walk from the village centre. Arco is beautifully situated in a natural bowl, surrounded by an arc of mountains and on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it benefits from a warm and sunny micro climate. The village is a charming mix of traditional Madeiran smallholdings and elegant modern holiday villas. The two cottages are placed snugly in a thriving rural area of this working Madeiran village, but still only 10 minutes walk from local cafes, a mini supermarket and bakers shop. Tucked away along a secluded levada, you are more likely to hear chickens than motor cars!
Booking notes
Towels and linen included in rental price, end of stay cleaning and the linen is changed weekly. A 25% deposit is required to secure a booking. The balance is payable by six weeks before the holiday.

"After a steep path down hill we reached a 'secret garden' surrounded by banana plantations and farmhouses. Once inside we were almost blinded by the stunning view onto the ocean. The spacious garden itself and generous terraces offer enough privacy to the guests of the 3 houses through different levels, plants and balustrades to have the feeling of almost absolute individuality. Garden Cottage's equipment had everything we needed. We only had problems with the tv, only getting 2 channels, and the stereo chain which might have to be looked at. Information in a file was helpful as well as maps and brochures on a shelf. After days of walking, discovering and eating out we were happy to return to the silence of our 'secret garden, having a glass of wine on the terrace only hearing the sounds of animals and nature - bliss!"
