These beautifully maintained homes sit peacefully above the charming capital town of Funchal, on the hillside on the Caminho do Monte below the famous wicker toboggan run. They have breathtaking views over the town and bay with the ocean beyond. Restored and equipped to a high standard, each villa has comfortable, spacious accommodation, a private pool and gardens abundant with fragrant, colourful sub-tropical plants. Peacefully located and linked by a lockable gate, they can be rented together or apart. A 10-minute bus ride takes you to the centre of the charming town of Funchal. Car hire is not essential but useful. The expressway is only 5 minutes away and within 10-15 minutes you can reach various famous tropical gardens, two golf courses and wonderful island walking. Maid-service is provided by cheerful, friendly Ciseltina twice weekly. She offers babysitting in the evening on request and her husband, Alfonso, can provide a door-to-door supermarket run - each for a small charge.

Notes on prices
Prices are for up to 4 guests using 2 bedrooms. For D'Alegria an additional charge of €78 is made for a 5th or 6th guest OR use of a 3rd bedroom and for Belflores €85 for a 5th guest OR use of 3rd bedrooom.
Included: Welcome pack of breakfast provisions;fresh flowers on arrival;towels and pool towels;maid service twice weekly. Cot & high chair for infant and/or extra Z-bed for additional child age under 12. Pool heating at D'Alegria only. Extra pool heating can be supplied from Nov to mid-May.
Changeover day
Arrivals are normally accepted any day except Sunday for bookings of 7 nights or more (a 5 or 6 night stay can be arranged - please ask). Normal check-in is from 15.00 and check-out by 10.30 however, we do our best to fit in with your flight times.

The spacious living room has comfortable armchairs and sofa seating for 6, French windows opening on to the garden and an open fireplace with logs provided for winter evenings (small charge). TV with cable connection, DVD/VCR recorder, CD/cassette radio, internet broadband with connection cable - bring your laptop. The kitchen is well equipped with gas hob, electric oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher & microwave oven, coffee machine, toaster, plus crockery, cutlery, glassware & cooking/serving utensils for 6 guests. Next door is a laundry room with washing machine, steam iron and ironing board. The open plan dining room adjoining the kitchen has a table and seating for 6. Three comfortable bedrooms upstairs have gorgeous sea views: one with double bed, one with twin beds and one with a single bed. Notes on accommodation
Both properties are luxuriously furnished with maid-service, linen and towels changed twice-weekly. High chair and cot available at no extra charge. Hair dryers provided. At Casa Belflores an extra pull-out bed is available in the single room for a child, making the total occupancy in this villa 6. At Quinta d'Alegria a Z-bed can be installed in a bedroom for a child, making total occupancy 7.
Open log fire (weekly charge of €25 for logs) and portable gas heater for winter months.
Sorry, no smoking in the villas - only outside - and no pets.

Accessibility
Neither property is designed for wheelchair use. Quinta d'Alegria has a garage within the grounds of the house and easy access to the ground floor but all three bedrooms are upstairs. Casa Belflores has street car parking with steps leading up through the garden to the house itself and all 3 bedrooms are upstairs.
Outside
Both houses are ideal for indoor/outdoor living and you can enjoy eating meals outside (except perhaps Jan-Mar) with splendid panoramic views of the whole bay of Funchal, to the harbour and way out to sea. Spacious terraces in the gardens and around the pools are ideal for sun worshippers or, should you prefer, there is plenty of shade from a variety of trees. The gardens/terraces are secure with sunbeds, chairs, tables, parasols and a Weber BBQ.
Quinta D'Alegria: The private pool (10x4m) is in front of the house. During May-Sep the water temperature can be maintained at approx 25ºC. From Nov to mid-May extra pool heating must be pre-ordered if this temperature is required. For this a charge of €10 per day is payable locally on arrival.
Casa Belflores: The pool (9 x 4m) is located in the upper garden of the house in a very sheltered and private location, perfect in winter for soaking up some rays! The water is not heated and can be a bit chilly during the winter months.
Coast/Beach
The coast is about 10 minutes drive by car. Madeira's beaches are all pebble, with the exception of a few which have black sand and one with golden sand , Calheta beach, 30 minutes west of Funchal. Sea access for swimming is excellent along the south coast, either from the beaches, the many seafront hotels or from the 'lidos' which, for a small daily charge, offer swimming in sea-water pools and protected areas in the sea.
Golf
Two championship courses, Palheiro (5kms) and Santa da Serra (15kms) offer challenging golfing amongst spectacular scenery. Or you might like to take a day trip to the nearby island of Porto Santo to try out the new course there!
Travel
Funchal international airport is 15 minutes by car. Daily (except Tues in winter) ferries to the island of Porto Santo run from Funchal harbour. Car hire is not essential but recommended if you wish to explore this beautiful island with its amazingly varied topography and vegetation. A bus stop and taxi rank can be found on the street below the houses.
Distances
Locally: Five minutes walk from the villa, the bakery with café bar makes fresh bread, even wholemeal on request. A few good restaurants are also within easy walking distance. Distances: Funchal centre and harbour: 3km (20 minutes walk9 down hill to Funchal (centre) with plenty going on. Marina with a wonderful selection of boat trips including Dolphin and Whale watching or big game fishing. Tropical gardens, various 3-5km. Levada walking 2-25km!

Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone: an opera house/theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and restaurants without number, multi-screen cinema, a Roman Catholic cathedral dating back to the 14th century and an English Anglican Church built in 1822.
So many places to visit on this beautiful island full of excellent places to eat. Santana is worth a visit with the traditional triangular shaped tiny houses. The Monte Palace Gardens are huge and full of lots to see or the Botanical Gardens which include tropical birds, peacocks – white ones too. The cable cars give you a fantastic view lasting 9 minutes each way… leaving from both locations. Try going up the cable car from the Botanical gardens, to Monte and down the hill on the famous toboggan run which stops at the end of the street of the villa… they will go slow if you want. The kids loved it!
This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring and the new network of roads and tunnels make this so easy now.
Owner Joy, having adopted this island as her home 26 years ago and with years of experience in the hospitality industry, offers these two holiday homes which rate among the most desirable and luxurious on Madeira. Maid service is provided by cheerful and very kind maid Ciseltina, who is also happy to do babysitting in the evening on request.

Bookings are made through Linda and Norberta at MHRD Lda. Payments are accepted in euros by bank transfer or Pay Pal. A 30% deposit must be paid at the time of booking; the balance is due 8 weeks prior to arrival. If a booking is made within 8 weeks of arrival, full payment is required when booking. We can book airport transfers, car hire and delicious meals served in your villa too! Please ask for details.

The fabulous Quinta d'Alegria (submitted Jan 2008)
My family and I stayed here for Christmas and New Year 2007-2008 (children 3 & 6). The villa is just as described and more. A very luxurious and special Quinta with plenty of space. The views are fantastic, especially for the New Year celebrations - the best fireworks in the world! The friendly maid (who knows some English) keeps the villa spotless. The pool is fab fun for all the family too. The agent and the owner are very helpful, any questions answered with both a professional and friendly approach.

Villa excellent, clean and beautifully restored. About 5 mins in a taxi from main Funchal centre. Overall we had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves.

About the owner
I came from the UK to Madeira over thirty years ago, have a Portuguese husband and two children at university. My working life has been devoted to the tourist industry (mostly in Madeira) until, in 2005, I was appointed Hon. British Consul.
This island, its people and its visitors are of huge importance to me and I take great pride in our two holiday rental properties and in the attention that I give to guests. I live next door so am normally on hand to help you plan what you might do when here and, because cooking is one of my passions, I am happy to prepare supper for your arrival evening, more often if requested.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Handsome Quinta d'Alegria, built in 1871 and with beautiful gardens, came on to the market in a ruined state in 1988. It sits next to our own villa and we couldn't resist buying it! Over the next few years we painstakingly restored it into an award-winning home and it has been popular with holiday guests ever since. The location is excellent - a peaceful residential area with stunning views over the bay of Funchal, a couple of good restaurants within walking distance and good public transport services into the city centre.
