Located in Funchal Historic Zone 'Zona Velha', the sea is within walking distance (5-10 mins walk). The cottage is very private with lovely subtropical gardens with bananas and roses. The cottages are very elegant furnished in a modern comfortable style, with quality bedlinen and towels provided. Sunny pool area, with modern lounge chairs on either side of the pool (shade is provided by the banana trees and parasols), very relaxing and private atmosphere. Pool is shared with main house. Each cottage has its own BBQ. The garden has tropical plants, roses, and organic herbs for your use in the kitchen. A perfect base to enjoy Funchal and explore the rest of the island. Both apartments are a favorite with repeat guests, some staying for 3 months at a time, we have many positive reviews and references. The neighborhood has an excellent bakery and grocer up the road and a bus stop close by. Atmosphere is very relaxing, sunny and an authentic taste of Funchal life. Authentic Madeira.

A stylish spacious one bedroom flat with full length windows overlooking the swimming pool (ample privacy supplied by curtains and shutters). The Pool Cottage makes the most use of the ample pool area, with private use of the barbecue and outdoor dining space. Large sunny bedroom with twin beds, a window and french windows look onto the garden, quality white bedlinen provided. Hairdryer, iron and ironing board also provided. Spacious living room with LCD TV with cable and satellite, and floor length windows opening onto the pool area. Blinds give the cottage privacy and shade. Fully equipped kitchenette including stove, fridge and microwave. Bathroom with wc, bath/shower. furnished with L´Occitane liquid soap, bath and pool towels. Swimming pool has modern lounge chairs on either side, with parasols (pool towels supplied). Services included consumption of water and electricity, garden and swimming pool maintenance and once a week cleaning with changeover of linen and towels. |

Washing machine provided, as well as an iron and ironing board. Parking is done on the road just above. Not suitable for young children due to pool safety precautions. Free wireless broadband Internet.

Coast/Beach
Lovely Barreirinha beach and swimming complex just 5-10 mins walk (300m), this is a public access beach in the historic old quarter of Funchal. Buses reach all other resorts around the island.
Golf
Palheiro Golf 5 mins car drive away and Santo da Serra Golf 20 mins drive away.
Travel
20km from Madeira International airport. 1km from Funchal port. Car is not necessary as a bus stop is just 10m down the road.

Set 300m from the historic centre of Funchal, the market and restaurants of the ‘zona velha’. 10 mins walk from cinema, larger supermarket and shopping mall. Small supermarket and coffee bar 20m away.

About the owner
Since moving to Madeira 10 years ago we fell in love with the old part of Funchal. We live here because it is the ideal combination of sun, old fashioned charm, gardens and sea. We were lucky to find an old colonial house here, over a hundred years old, and we converted it into our home. Since then we have rescued two other properties in the old town. These houses are a dream, totally unique to Madeira, and this part of Funchal. Most are over a hundred years old, and have some British influence as the original owners a hundred years ago were wine merchants from the UK. We are passionate about the old town and about conserving these houses for future generations. This area has small Casinhas de prazer, which are garden gazebos, that are unique to Funchal and which we have also restored.

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
This is by far the most charming part of Funchal, just above the old town it has great views, very warm climate but is still within walking distance of the restaurants, fruit and fish market and busy downtown centre. This area is filled with lovely old houses, mysterious gazebos peeking out onto the streets and lots of gardens. Just in front of the house is a famous view point called Villa Guida, this has the most stunning view of the harbour and is a favourite place for painters and photographers to capture the harbour up close. The area is peaceful and intersting. Where it is sunny most of the day, lies the Pool and Painters Cottage with the swimming pool and garden. We planted banana trees, lots of different roses, palm trees and other sub tropical plants.
Unique benefits of the property
The reason we have so many repeat guests has to do with it being an Oasis within the city of Funchal. The atmosphere around the pool is totally quiet and peaceful, yet 10minutes walk and you are in the hub of the city centre. Each cottage has its private barbecue, sea views and very comfortable and nicely decorated interiors. Maintenance is constantly being done, so they are spick and span. We respond very quickly to any request, be it with information or anything a guest needs. As we live close by any problem is solved rapidly. These two cottages are totally unique as they give our guests the feeling that they live as locals, in the most authentic part and picturesque of Funchal.
