About a thirty-minute drive from Loches self-catering villas is the town of Amboise, home to one of the region’s most spectacular chateaux – Chateau d’Amboise. This building, like many in region, towers over the town and offers a wonderful view of the Loire River and surrounding countryside. One of its great claims to fame is that it was here that Francois I received the famous Italian polymath, Leonardo da Vinci. The region around Indre-Loire cottages is synonymous with wine production, and a tour through the beautiful rural landscapes here will guide you past a number of famous wineries, many of which are open to visitors. Head east from Loches gites and you’ll come to the town of Chinon – it’s at the heart of a wine growing area and home to another spectacular chateau with a fascinating history.
