A great place to sample rural Vendee life is at Vouvant, an idyllic medieval village about 30 minutes from Les Sables-d’Olonne gites. Fontenay-le-Comte is found towards the south of the department and boasts some fine examples of late-18th Century architecture, dating back to the time that this town was the capital of Vendee. Family attractions are also plentiful in the region around Les Sables-d’Olonne villas. A highlight is Puy du Fou, about an hour northeast, where you can enjoy a number of excellent historical shows with professional actors and stuntmen.
