Further Details
Malindi is a small town, but there are numerous banks, shops, restaurants, and supermarkets. Most shops accept cash only, so a visit to the ATM is a necessity. Also, closing times vary between different shops, with some taking long midday siestas, while others close at 4. There are many restaurants and hotels should you decide to eat out, with Italian food predominating. Fruit and vegetables are readily available, either beside the road or at Malindi market. Both bicycle and car rental are available. Big game fishing is very popular with Marlin, Swordfish and Broad bill prize trophies. There is also a marine park which can be visited in a glass bottomed boat. From here you can snorkel in some of Kenya's loveliest areas of coral garden. Next to the sea is Vasco da Gama's Pillar. This is the actual cross planted by the Portuguese sailor as he became the first European to reach Kenya by sea. If you are interested in natural forests, visit the Arabuko-Sokoke forest, the largest patch of indigenous forest left in East Africa. It is home to a glorious variety of butterflies and several unusual species of birds and mammals. The Gedi ruins at nearby Watamu show what a 13th century town would have been like.
