Chill on the terrace with a view of the beach

The villa is in a private and secure location on Galu beach, away from crowded Diani beach and the hotels. It is surrounded by gardens and set on the front part of a 2.5 acre plot the back part is tropical forest. The beach is very wide with stunning white, soft sand and turquoise island waters. Perfect for relaxing on the sunbeds, kite surfing, windsurfing, fishing, diving and snorkelling. Diani is also a convenient distance to wildlife parks such as Tsavo (2nd largest in the world) and Amboseli. There is a light aircraft runway nearby with direct flights to the must-see Masai Mara. It is replete with bird life, rare breeds of monkeys, Bush babies and vibrant tropical forest. 5 mins from the shops and banks etc and 40 mins drive to Mombasa. The beach experience here is more exclusive than the likes of crowded, rocky Mombasa beaches and is secluded from the all-inclusive hotels of Diani. It is run by a family who have been here 40 years and are extremely well informed in this area.

Owner profile

Tony, heading down to the sea for an evening swim

About the owner
Hi, I am Linzi, eldest daughter of two to Tony and Joey. They are not familiar with computers or the internet so I manage the property information and online bookings for them. We are a Kenyan family of British decent and were all born and brought up here, so we can all speak swahili and have our hearts in Africa. My dad was a 'bush pilot' but has since retired as at his age they do not issue commercial license. My mum is semi-retired. She is an artist/ house designer and so she works when she gets commissioned. She has designed and decorated what is now Kenyaways Beach Villas and Oljoto cottages (KY11) today. They are both unique and social and have many stories to tell. They live a humble life in Diani and have helped out their staff, environment and community in so many ways.

Year purchased: 1960's

Why the owner chose a home in this location
My dad bought his 5 acre property on Galu beach when he was 23 years old as he had the idea of starting a dive business before any existed in Diani. He borrowed equiv. of GBP 1000 from his dad to buy it, and had to negotiate with the chief of the nearby village. Everyone thought he was mad buying a property 'in the bush' as it was quite remote in those days and didn't even have an access road within a mile of it. However you can see how he fell in love with this place, it is the most lovely spot on the beach where the sea is a sandy lagoon. It has amazing old indigenous trees which he preserved and added and is almost overgrown with plants and trees. It has such a charm and relaxing feel without any boundary. It is now a short drive on a tarmac road to the nearest shops and conveniences.

Unique benefits of the property
This property makes you feel closer to nature and closer to Africa. So many other property's in Diani are built by European owners with big walls and electric fences around their property. They have cut down indigenous in favor of exotic palms. It is so special as it still has no perimeter wall, the animals and monkeys can come and go as they like without any shortage of indigenous plants to eat. The architecture is open to the sea breeze and has no boxed in Air conditioned rooms which is the norm in these parts and this day in age. It is practical and peaceful, and just makes you feel great. It is a short drive to shops, banks, you name it. I am a kite instructor and so I operate a watersports base in the high season.
