'Samawati' means 'a heavenly place' in the native Digo tongue. This is an Arabesque Swahili house on a pristine 2km stretch on Kenya's Indian Ocean seaboard. There are 4 spacious bedrooms, 3 large public rooms, bar, dining room, kitchen, outside patios and large swimming pool. Set up on a cliff above the beach, the villa and pool enjoy sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Access to the beach is via a private path - about 60 metres in length.

Notes on prices
Prices are for the property per day in UK pounds. Rates are for the full house on a fully staffed self-catering basis. There will be a £50 supplement charged per day over the Christmas and Easter periods.

Changeover day
Changeover days are completely flexible.

Accommodation
Bedrooms: Master Bedroom 1: The Sultan's suite: twin bedded, decorated Lamu-style, private bathroom.
Master Bedroom 2: The Simba room-large Lamu carved 4 poster double bed, private bathroom.
Bedrm 3: The Samaki room-twin beds.
Bedrm 4: The Ndege room-twin beds.
Bathrooms: Simba room with en-suite shower, WC and basin, and dressing-room area with additional basin.
Sultan suite with large en-suite with double shower area, WC, double basins.
Ndege room and Samaki room share bathroom with shower, WC and basin.
Kitchen: Cooker, hob, fridge/freezer, store cupboard. Four permanent staff take care of the house and guests. The staff comprise a cook, house servant, gardener and night watchman.
Living Rooms: Sitting room with cushioned chairs, Swahili carved coffee table and writing bureau, with HiFi, books, board games. Room backs on to a Swahili courtyard. The Majlis - very spacious covered verandah overlooking coastal forest between house and beach.
Other: Dining room - Swahili carved large dining table seating 8 pax on Swahili carved chairs. Carved dresser for crockery. Lovely views through the arches and across the lawn to the ocean.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
Towels and linen are included. The property is taken care of by four members of staff employed permanently to clean, cook, garden and take care of guests.

Notes on accommodation
The house is spread across an elevated site with its own 200 metres of white beach. It offers an air of privacy combined with intimacy. All the furniture is hand carved by Swahili craftsmen. It is an ideal retreat for family holidays, enjoying the safe, warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Newly added is a stunning swimming pool. The pool affords excellent views of the indigenous forest below the house, and Indian Ocean beyond. As one relaxes in the pool, monkeys play in the trees, the breeze gently sways the palm trees, and a true sense of bliss is realised!

Accessibility
Unfortunately Samawati is not suitable for people using wheelchairs, as all the bedrooms are upstairs.

Outside
Samawati is situated on 9 acres of lush coastal vegetation with indigenous trees which include coconut palms, doum palms, tamarind trees, mango trees and a baobab. Patios with Swahili seats and sunbeds give way to sweeping lawns.

Coast/Beach
Samawati house is on an elevated site overlooking the Msambweni Bay through a grove of coconut palms. The house is set on a coral cliff about 60 metres from a broad sandy beach 2kms long from headland to headland. At low tide there are tidal pools and excellent goggling on the Msambweni Reef some 400 metres from the shore. It is a working beach with the local Digo fishermen paddling or sailing out in their dugout canoes in traditional style to catch their daily meals.

Golf
An excellent 18 hole golf course at Leisure Lodge, Diani - approx. 15 miles north of Msambweni.

Special interest holidays
Activities: Snorkeling, swimming, reefing are enjoyed from the house. Within a 30 minute drive at the famous Diani Beach you have golf, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, camel rides, tennis, scuba diving and deep sea fishing. The best bill fishing for the avid sportsman is 45 minutes drive south to Shimoni at the Pemba Channel Fishing Club. A short distance into the hinterland is the wooded Shimba Hills National Park, where elephant, buffalo, sable and other antelope can be seen. Further inland you have the enormous Tsavo National Park.

Travel
Fly by scheduled flight into Mombasa International Airport and then drive (chauffeur or self drive) 35 miles south on the main tarmac road to Tanzania until you reach the D544 junction to Msambweni District Hospital. Follow this tarmac road for 6km and continue through the Hospital grounds and onwards for another 2kms until you reach the house (signboarded). There is also a private airstrip at Ukunda serving Diani beach. We can arrange car hire for you.

Distances
Msambweni is 335 miles by road from Nairobi. It is 35 miles south of Mombasa. Diani shopping area is 15 miles away. Msambweni village is 1.5 miles offering many basic foodstuffs at wayside kiosks. Fresh fish, crustacea, fruit and vegetables are brought to the back door.

Further details
There are two banks at Diani open 9:30am - 3pm Monday to Friday and 9:30 - 11:30am on Saturdays. Both banks have ATMs. Most restaurants, shops and sporting centres in Diani take credit cards. There is a good, modern private hospital in Diani (Diani Beach Hospital). Kenya shillings are the national currency.
