Casa Rosa is a traditional stone farmhouse situated high in the green hills of Umbria, in the park of Mount Subasio, 6 miles north-east of Assisi. The house is divided into 3 apartments, each completely self-contained, 1 large apartment occupying the whole of the upper floor and 2 smaller apartments on the ground floor. It is surrounded by woods and farmland. Clear mountain streams form waterfalls and rock pools and these provide bathing possibilities in the summer. The enchanting small medieval city of Assisi has hardly changed in the last 500 years, and part of it remains as it was 750 years ago when St. Francis lived there. It also offers visitors good restaurants, shops, music, drama and, at the beginning of May, the spectacular spring celebration of 'Calendimaggio'.

Notes on accommodation
Casa Rosa's position, over 450 m. (1500 ft) in the hills, means that in summer it is generally cooler than most of the rest of Italy. Towels and bed-linen are provided and a child's cot is available if required. There is a telephone which guests can use.

Accessibility
Apartment 2 is suitable for an accompanied wheelchair user with extra wide doors, bidet and WC and easy entry shower. However, it is quite a way to the swimming pool, although feasible.

Outside
Swimming pool (12m x 6m) A spectacular lap pool, shared by the apartments, is located a little way above the house in a marvellously tranquil position with panoramic views over the national park. The pool is bordered along one side by lavender, local herbs and a large cherry tree; on the other side is a wide terrace paved in local stone with sun-beds and deck chairs for lounging and sunbathing, here there is also a barbecue and gazebo. A shower is built in to the stone wall at one end of the terrace. The formal gardens have terraces, patios and outdoor furniture. There is a barbecue and a traditional bread/pizza oven. This is an ideal place for relaxaton, peace and to get a way from it all. From Casa Rosa it is possible to take walks within the national park of Mount Subasio. Jennifer Holmes will provide you with many itineries and maps.

(15 miles) away. To the West, Lake Trasimeno offers swimming and water sports for most of the year. Further details
The farm stands in a regional park, on a spur above a small river, with breathtaking views over the Tescio valley and across the hills to Mount Subasio. The owner, an English painter, lives on the premises. The immediate area is one of great natural beauty. The hills are covered by forest, mostly oak, and by small farms with their olive groves, pastures and fields of wheat, barley and oats. Far from any main road, it is a very quiet and peaceful place. For most of the day the only sound is the singing of birds and crickets and the river in the valley below.

The hills and forest hide martens, porcupine and wild boar, all of which have been seen on the farm. The wealth of bird life includes buzzards, goldfinches and hoopoes. In spring the meadows, fields and verges abound in wild flowers, among them poppies, cyclamen, wild gladioli, and many types of orchid. From May to July fireflies dance in the night, and through the summer the Farm is home to thirty varieties of butterfly. Along the river are waterfalls and natural pools where one can bathe in the summer. The hills, woods and valleys offer many possible routes for walking.

Shops and restaurants. Within easy reach of Casa Rosa there is a restaurant at ‘Agriturismo Le Querce’ (2 miles) and also at ‘Ristorante Da Giovannino’ (4 miles). A small supermarket is also nearby (4 miles). Larger supermarkets can be found at Assisi (6 miles), here you will also find banks post offices and a pharmacy.

September, 2010:

“Idyllic location, wonderful welcome … just perfect”
"There are too many good things to say about Casa Rosa. It’s perfectly located off the beaten track, but near enough to civilisation as well (you will need a car). The cottages / apartments are lovely and everything you need is right there. This is all topped off by a wonderful, friendly welcome by the hostess, Gay. It didn’t surprise me at all to know that all of the other guests we met were all return bookings! If in Umbria, this is THE place to stay."

"We’ve had a wonderful holiday at Casa Rosa. Thank you Jennifer for all your kindness, food from the garden and gifts for the boys (porcupine quilts and rhino beetle!). It is so beautiful here. We have enjoyed these restaurants/places:
