The house from the olive grove
The house from the olive grove

Standing in its own olive grove, this charming and newly refurbished 18th century farmhouse has a private pool and south west aspect overlooking the stunning Vale of Spoleto, with its small farms, monasteries, and pretty hilltop towns. We bought it primarily for holidays with family and friends. It is completely on its own, and offers security and solitude combined with easy access to Assisi and Spoleto and a rich diversity of sites of archaeological, art historical, musical, and historic delight. Shopping is easy, good value and sophisticated, and there are dozens of good places to eat. For hill walkers the mountains of the Sibillini National Park are an hour away. Umbria has no less than Tuscany to offer, and with a joyous scarcity of tourists to boot!

Outside
We have about three quarters of an acre of organic olive grove, part of a huge area of olives which stretches for miles along the mountainside between Assisi and Spoleto. From the terrace steps lead down a winding path to the newly upgraded pool, 10m x 5m, which has a terracotta tile surround with sun loungers, and a pergola for shade, with table and chairs for pool-side dining. Being at an altitude of 500 metres there is often a cool breeze while the Vale swelters below. The land has a glorious sunny aspect.

Coast/Beach
The nearest sea is the Adriatic coast (1 1/2 hours). We recommend Numano and Sirolo.

Travel
Rome (Ciampino) and Ancona Airports are both about two hours by car or rail, and are used for charter flights. Charter flights from Stansted Gatwick and Bristol, which can be very cheap. Rome Fiumicino Airport is for regular carriers. A car is essential.

Distances
Trevi and Borgo Trevi about 2 miles, Foligno 5, Spoleto 10, Assisi 18, Perugia 25, Spello 8, Montefalco 5, Todi 18, Florence 120, and Rome 95 (best visited by train from Spoleto).

Further details
Good shops for everyday needs in Trevi and Borgo Trevi, including excellent bakers, bank in Trevi with cashpoint. Enormous supermarket approx. 3 miles - sells everything from baby clothes to bread. Easy access to Assisi, Spoleto, Montefalco, Perugia, and Todi, all of which house exceptional works of art and architecture. Tranquil Lake Trasimeno is only 40 minutes away, with its charming lakeside resorts and little ferries to the islands, where you can either picnic or have a jolly good lunch. Spoleto's international music festival in June and July is just one of many local events, craft fairs, religious festivals, jousting tournaments and the like, many of which have been held for centuries, and are still as important to the local community as they ever were.
Trevi's specialities are olive oil and truffles. The shopping in Foligno is excellent, especially for fashions. The restaurants are particularly good because this is not regarded as an especially tourist region, so eating out is extra good value for money. In the house we have have details of our favourite restaurants and other attractions, together with maps of mountain walks in the Sibillinis, which are a pleasant drive up the beautiful Nerina Valley.

Guest comments
"I write to congratulate you on owning and restoring the finest villa we have stayed in, in Italy (and we have stayed in many!). La Maliarda was absolutely wonderful. The views are hard to descibe in words, the welcome warm, the pool clean, the villa immaculate throughout, the loggia perfect. All our guests who stayed were overwhelmed and are determined to return with friends. We truly enjoyed our time and hope to return."
