Casa La Selva is ideal for those looking for a relaxing break in the heart of Italy. Located on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, overlooking a quiet valley, Casa la Selva is perfect for getting away from it all, and a convenient base for exploring the area. There are five attractive bedrooms, three bathrooms, two spacious and comfortable living rooms and a large, traditional and well equipped kitchen/dining room. Outside there is a private swimming pool and large established gardens. Casa La Selva is available for private rentals, of one week or more for up to 10 people, throughout the year.

Changeover day
The house will be available from 1700 on the Saturday of the booking and should be vacated by 1000 on the departure Saturday.

Notes on accommodation
The pool is not fenced and the gardens are extensive.
Outside
The private pool is a good size (10x5m), with broad steps in the shallow end (1.3m deep) that allow easy access, whilst the deep end reaches 2.5m. The pool and patio have lighting for the evenings. There are several large outdoor tables and chairs for eating al fresco and a barbecue.
Coast/Beach
La Selva is set in the mountains and there are many good walks and tracks for cycling near by. Boat trips and sailing are available on Lake Trasimeno (25 minutes away by car).
Travel
Airports (times by car): Perugia (0:45), Forli (1:45hrs), Ancona (2hrs), Rome (2:30hrs), Pisa (2:30hrs), Florence (1:45hr)
Train Stations (times by car): Perugia (45mins), Cortona (45mins). A car is essential and hire cars can be picked up at any of the airports.
Distances
The nearest villiages are Spedalicchio (10 minutes drive) or St Leo Bastia (15 minutes). The towns of Umbertide and Mertacale have supermarkets, cashpoint and general facilities and are about 20 minutes by car. Citta di Castello (25 minutes), Perugia and Cortona (40 minutes) have extensive facilities and many designer shops as well as great restaurants. One of the best places is to eat is Nonna Gelsa in Niccone (15 minutes drive).
Booking notes
20% non returnable deposit at time of booking followed by full payment 8 weeks prior to rental period. £200 breakage deposit (refundable) to cover damage and additional gas for central heating. The winter rate does not include gas for central heating.

About the owner
Casa la Selva is owned by two families (the Squires and the Jacksons). We've been friends since university some 24 years ago and all love Italy.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We spent the best part of a year restoring Casa la Selva before spending our first summer there in 2003. We love this part of Italy and particularly this area of Umbria; the mountains and forests a beautiful throughout the year and the people are very welcoming. We always wanted a house in the middle of the countryside, away from neighbours and noise, when we found la Selva it completely met this requirement. The house sits in the middle of a 1 hectare plot with a further 2.5 hectares of meadow and woodland, in the summer the only noise you'll hear is the jingle of bells from the sheep on the hills.
Unique benefits of the property
We all love to cook so the most important room in the house is the kitchen. It's great to pop out to local markets and pick up great fresh ingredients to bring home to la Selva and cook for our family and friends.
When we're there we usually spend some time mountain biking and really enjoy a day's cycling from the house around the mountains on the tracks and unmade roads. Over the years we've found some great routes and I'm always happy to provide directions and maps. We usually pop into Perugia, Gubbio or Sienna to wander round the towns and eat in some of the best restaurants in central Italy. We can recommend some great places for lunch.
