Further details
The city of Arezzo is set at the confluence of four valleys: Casentino, Valtiberina, Valdichiana, Valdarno.
It was a great Etruscan and Roman centre. It offers a lot of artistic masterpieces: the Church of San Francesco with the Legend of the True Cross, the extraordinary masterpiece of Piero della Francesca; the romanesque church of Santa Maria, the gothic cathedral, the medieval church of San Domenico with Cimabue's crucifix, the renaissance loggias designed by Giorgio Vasari, the tower-houses of Piazza Grande with the oldest and most famous antiques fair (every first Sunday of the month and preceding Saturday) and the Giostra del Saracino in June and September.

Arezzo and the Four Valleys are characterised by landscape and art. Its position made it a region of transit of ancient pilgrim routes. It is also (Casentino) a land of spirituality in the silence of the fir and beech woods (now Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi). It is a territory rich in protected areas with superb panoramas and suggestive views: Alpe della Luna, Monti Rognosi, Sasso di Simone in Valtiberina; the extremely varied landscape of Valdarno with the gentle hills cloaked in vines and olives, the canyons of the Balze, the landscape immortalised by Leonardo da Vinci in the Mona Lisa; the valley of Valdichiana between the Sienese mountains and lake Trasimene with the etruscan city of Cortona.
