The house lies at the border of Garfagnana above the valley of the river Fegana, one of the most beautiful valleys of the whole region, marked by an unspoilt landscape and spectacular views onto the mountains Apenine and Apuan Alps. The area boast impressive places for example Orrido di Botri, a canyon with wild cliffs and rocks or the cave Grotta del Vento with its stalactites, stalagmites and underground watercourses. The whole area has a lot to offer to visitors. Nature lovers may go for walks or take hiking tours, sport lovers may choose among horse back riding, rafting, canoeing and fishing. In Autumn, it may be fun to take a walk to search of chestnuts and mushrooms. The charming town of Barga, Castelvecchio Pascoli the Spa town of Bagni di Lucca are also a must for visitors to the region. Lucca with its medieval walls is a short drive away and Pisa, Firenze and the wine lands of Chianti may all be visited in 1 day trip.

Changeover day
Changeover day is Saturday, although some flexibility can be arranged in low season. The house can be taken over on arrival day between 4pm and 7pm and has to be left on departure day between 8am and 10am.

Notes on accommodation
Swimming pool is available from the beginning of May to the end of September, unless differently arranged upon request.
Heating in the winter is provided by two fireplaces, pellet stove and gas heaters. The house is well thermalized by its stone walls (about half a meter thick), both in the winter and in summer time. The windows have double window panes. High chair and cot are stored in the utility room, and can be put into place on request.

Accessibility
Property is not suitable for wheelchair bound people. Ground floor main entrance with private terrace is accessed by 10 steps, first floor entrance by 6 steps. The house is reached within two roads, asphalted but with some bottlenecks (as an example, one passes through with Audi A4).
Outside
The house is in a prominent position on the top edge of the village, free on 3 sides and built on the back to another house. The house has a lovely garden (about 200sqm) with an outdoor area fully equipped with portable charcoal barbecue, sink in stone, sun umbrella, table and chairs for dining alfresco, a beautiful terrace with garden furniture where you may sunbath after a refreshing dive into the gorgeous pool (private) completely set in the earth (7,20 m x 3,70m depth 1,30), and from where you can enjoy spectacular views over the mountains. Coast/Beach
The premier resort of Viareggio (Tirrenian sea) with its great beaches is just over 1 hour drive. In July and August it is usually very crowded but in other months it may be very peaceful.
The Cinque Terre is five beautiful hilltop villages along the Italian coastline (Ligurian sea). It is a great place for walking and swimming. They are located around 2 hours drive away depending on traffic.
Golf
1. Golf Club Garfagnana distance from the house Al Colloreo 42km 51 min drive. Località Braccicorti Pieve Fosciana (Lu). 6 holes 18 par. Facilities include driving range, putting green, rental golf clubs, practice bunker, bar, bouvette, club house. Open from April to November. Closed on Monday.
2. Golf Club Versilia distance from house Al colloreo 70km, 1h and 15 min drive. Pietrasanta (Lu). 18 holes - Par 71 - CR 71,7 - SR 123. Facilities include driving range, putting green, cars, carts, swimming pool, tennis, pro-shop, hotel, bar, restaurant. Open throughout the year. Closed on Tuesdays, with the exception of public holidays, from November to February.
Skiing
Abetone is one of the most important places of Apenine for skiing and snowboarding in the winter (more than 50km ski) as well as summer sport in the warmer months. Abetone is approximately 1 hour away (51km) by car from Vitiana.
Special interest holidays
Upon request, a course of making Pane di Patate (potato bread) can be arranged. The bread will be cooked in a big wood oven located nearby the house. This procedure of making and cooking bread follows the ancient local traditions and customs. For fishing lovers, guided fishing expeditions can be arranged upon request to go and fish, among others, Salmo trutta (Trota Fario) in the many rivers of the area (only during the fishing season: beginning of March - end of September).
Travel
A car is recommended to assist your site-seeing visits but a local bus and train service is available to most places of interest. Bus stop at the village.
The nearest train stops: Bagni di Lucca-Fornoli (11 min drive) Ghivizzano (15 min drive).
Pisa is the nearest International Airport (1 hour drive) with services from most parts of northern Europe (car hire is available here).
Livorno is the nearest harbour (1 hour 20 min drive) with boarding to Island of Elba, Sicily, Sardinia.

The area offers local products (cheese, salami, farro, chestnuts, cornstarch Formentone, honey, bread of potatoes) and good restaurants to taste typical dishes of the Garfagnana and Italian cuisine. At Al Colloreo, information and brochures on local products, restaurants, activities events in the area as well as places of interest are available.
Shopping in Lucca - Lucca is a city walled by intact Renaissance-era walls, located about 33km from the house. It has great shopping, cafes, bars, restaurants and squares. Bike riding is the best way to see Lucca, and bike hire can be found near the city gates.
There are in the area many ancient stone bridges, worthwhile to be seen. A magnificent one is the Devil's Bridge, remarkable example of medieval engeneering, that you see in Borgo a Mozzano along the road from Lucca to Vitiana. Vitiana is a country of Roman origin with first historical news on X century. In the area there are many medieval town and castles, among them Barga. The small shop of the village Vitiana can be found on the right of the house entrance gate, ten-fifteen meters away. If found closed you can ring the bell, because the shop-keepers live above the shop. You can buy meats, cheeses, milk, bread produced by their farm. On request, they also can fournish local production season vegetables, or go to supermarket and bring you, the following day, whatever you need. Coop is a supermarket situated in Fornoli (9km). This store has most of your everyday needs. -Small variety shops together with banks, pharmacy, post office can be found in the streets of Fornoli (9km) and Bagni di Lucca (12km).
Shopping centers in Leclerc in Gallicano (towards Castelnuovo Garfagnana, 9km from Vitiana), Esselunga in Ponte a Moriano (on the outskirts of Lucca 25km from Vitiana). English newspapers can be found in Bagni di Lucca in the paper shop around the corner from the tobacco (Tabacchi) shop on the main street. Internet available in Bagni di Lucca.

About the owner
I live in Italy with my husband Fabrizio, our dog Alcohol and 5 nice delightful cats. I have two children, Federico and Giulia, already grown up. My husband and I both live and work at the seaside, but we love very much the area of Mid Valley of Serchio and Garfagnana, where the small medieval stone villages and fortified villages on hilltops well match with the wilderness of untouched landscapes and with the magnificent presence of the Apuan Alps from one side and the Apenine from the other side. Moreover we love to recognize also in the taste of local foods the culture and the flavour of our ancient roots.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
I am the sole owner of this house since 2007. It was already a beautiful one but I did some works to improve it, also completely renewing bathrooms and kitchen and building the swimming pool. My house is the result of inheritance of my parents and uncles, who intensely loved this area and were used to spend together here summer holidays and Christmas holidays. The house was bought by my family in the 60's, but starting from the beginning of the last century, already my grandparents were used to come here in Vitiana and be guested for holidays in the vicarage of the village by the Parrish itself. The love for Vitiana and the area came intact directly to me and my family.

My house is lovely and cosy, and in ideal location both for visiting interesting naturalistic/historical places, and for resting with family and friends, both in summer and in winter, in a place with magnificent views, from house and garden, over an angle of 360 degree, from the mountains of the Apenine above Orrido di Botri, to over the Mid Valley of Serchio and Apuan Alpes, up to the Valley of river Fegana and the Pizzorne plateau.
