Guest comments
Our group of eight recently spent 10 nights at Virginia’s amazing mill house and had a wonderful time. The house is charming, filled with works of art and has plenty of space for a large group. The pool and gardens are lovely and the views are spectacular. Trevi is a delightful town with every facility you need and a fantastic choice of restaurants and cafes. We were spoilt by the quality of food and wine from the region. Trevi is within easy driving distance of other beautiful hill towns in the area such as Assisi, Spoleto and Gubbio. Virginia was a great hostess, very hospitable and helpful. We didn’t want to leave and would love to stay here again

Owner profile
About the owner
Virginia Ryan (artist-writer) and Giancarlo Izzo (Italian diplomat currently on mission in West Africa) offer their wonderfully restored old olive mill for rent during the periods they are abroad. The house contains fascinating contemporary artworks, collected over many years of international contact with artists. Read Virginia's book about the house and the experience of moving to Italy from Edinburgh - ask owner for details.
This property is ideal for the art lover, the Italophile, the lap-swimmer, the wine-taster, the walker, photographer, gardener and would-be olive cultivator.
Year purchased: 1996
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We found Trevi after 2 decades of international living. An Australian-Italian couple with 2 children, we were searching for a small town with easy access to the city, and with a cultural ferment in the area. We found it! Our house looks out over the valley, but has the facilities of great restaurants, shops and museums (historic and contemporary) within easy walking distance. Each season brings it's charms: a perfect place to savour the true spirit of Central Italy, away from the maddening crowds. Think poppies in March, sunflowers and fireflies in June, heat and cricket-song mid summer, and olive oil and bruschetta deep in the winter, when awaking to the mist-covered valley below with clear blue sky above, is a season delight. Romantic Italian rustic and international chic.
Unique benefits of the property
It's not easy to have this much space and be so close to the action, even in provincial Italy. You'll be staying in a spacious, artistic environment, yet steeped in local history. The ancient house was once an oil-producing mill until the big frost of 1956. It retains the flavour, whilst being comfortable and inviting to foreign guests.
History, tradition, art and festivals brought us here. Staying in the millhouse, walking up the winding alleys to the Friday market or back from a summer concert in the piazza, you will attune to the history, but also to the reality of what contemporary Italian living at it's best, outside the big cities, is all about. We think you will never wish to leave- but if you do, just hop on the local train for a day in Rome or Florence!
