Further details
Iano dates back to 1004, Le Monache was built during this period. Le Monache (the Nuns)was a convent of Dominican Nuns or Poor Clares who worked and lived a life of seclution and silence in a Quiet Place. Over the centuries it passed into the hands of the locals who made their own imprint on the building and continued to farm the land. World War II also left its mark Le Monache with its underground tunnels became the hiding place for the Resistance , and young boys and girls during the retreat of the Germans from Volterra. Today the old road now paved which connects us to Volterrra still runs through the hamlet. We began restoration 1991 with the last phase of restoration completed 2004.

Liliana, I just wanted to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed our second visit to Podere le Monache. It was everything we remembered, only hotter! Thank you for booking the restaurant - we ate there 4 times in all. We hope to return to Iano sometime soon. Regards Tracy
I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you for letting us stay at your apartments in Iano this Spring. My family had a wonderful time. My wife absolutely loved the place and wished we had found your place last year!
It was our best experience in Italy so far, and have travelled a great deal. Todd Millar
Thanks again & hope to be returning soon. A quick message to say we all had a brilliant time at Le Monache. Our 4th visit and still just as good! Those in our group who had not been before were just as enchanted with the place. Kim,
