There are the golf courses at 15 minutes by car from Stresa.
Skiing
Stresa is built on the side of Mottarone, which rises to 1500m, and offers some very nice walking opportunities without becoming terribly serious mountain hiking. To be recommended is taking the cable car up to the top, and then walking down to the mid station on one of the longer routes, before returning the Stresa on the cable car. Alternatively, exploring by Mountain bike which can be hired in the town.
The Ossola valleys provide plenty of choice for more serious walking, much of which is no more than an hour's drive of Stresa.
The Valley leading up to Macugnaga has been well developed and there are numerous well signed and relatively un-strenuous walks. Macugnaga also offers some wonderful views of Monte Rose, the second highest Alpine / European mountain.
Special interest holidays
On the door step are numerous bars and restaurants, pizzerias, a local supermarket, and many local speciality shops. From her one can easily explore the lake with the famous Borromee Islands, numerous woodland walks, historical gardens, the cableway to the top of Mottarone above Stresa, as well as train and highway access to Milan, Turin, Alessandria, Bergamo, etc.
Milan is excellent for shopping and is easily reached from Stresa with either the inexpensive "regional trains", or on the faster, direct, "Cis Alpino" service. Turin is practically impossible without a car, and the outskirts reflect its long standing industrial history. The city centre however, is an absolute jewel and certainly has a more relaxed Mediterranean feel than one finds in the bustle of Milan.
Lago Maggiore is the largest of the Italian Lakes at 65km long, with the top of the lake crossing into Switzerland. There are numerous places to visit dotted all around the lake.
Travel
The Malpensa Airport is 50 Km from Stresa.
Service Bus "Alibus" from April to October or trai.
The car isn't essential because in Stresa there are all services.
Distances
From Stresa we have the three Borremees Islands. Isola Bella (pretty) includes the Borromeo palace with its wonderful gardens. Isola Pescattore (fisherman's) has no specific attraction and is nice for relaxing on the beach or in a bar. Isola Madre (mother) is the home of the Italian Botanical Institute, and a very worth while visit for garden lovers.
The 100 valleys railway is a smashing day out, with a mountain train which winds its way up through the 100 valleys to Locarno.
Booking notes
In confirmation booking, I ask 30% of total amount with money transfer ; the rest is to pay cash in arrival of guests in Stresa.
Guest comments
Hello Gigliola,
I just wanted to write and say how beautiful we thought the apartment was and in such a fantastic setting. The apartment has been refurbished to such a high standard and all the antique furniture in the bedroom was delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and only wished that we had booked if for longer! Maybe next time ;-)
We would not hesitate to recommend the apartment to our friends and hope you have many busy seasons.
All the best.
Regards,
Mhairi Cummins
