Villanova was built over a hundred years ago from the stones of a 12th century village and stands on a promontory amongst sunflower fields, olive groves and vineyards. The house, restored lovingly by its owners for their own family and guests, is featured prominently in the book 'Restoring a Home in Italy' by Elizabeth Minchilli. There are antique furnishings, original art and oriental rugs - these give the house its atmosphere of luxury with an emphasis on comfort. Outside, wander our gardens laced with medieval walls and enjoy our unrivalled view of Todi. Our delightfully cheerful housekeeper Triestina is one of our coveted treasures and is happy to prepare delicious Italian country meals ready at the end of a day out touring the region's beautiful hilltowns. The layout of the house is ideal for two families and also perfect as a romantic hideaway.

Owner profile

Year after year we can't wait to come back

About the owner
I live in London with my two teenage children and our Maine Coon cat Sammie. Inspired by the beauty of Italy and the beauties of our Todi garden, I have recently switched careers and now work as a garden designer.

Year purchased: 1995

Why the owner chose a home in this location
I lived worked as a journalist in Italy for 10 years and it was my dream to have a home there. The book 'Restoring a Home in Italy', which has become a classic of its kind, tells the story of the painstaking renovation of Villanova and other beautiful villas like it around Italy. I was determined to have a home for my children to appreciate the wonders of Italian cuisine and culture and managed to complete the restoration just after our daughter was born. The arduous effort has paid off: Villanova is now a happy haven for friends and family. Even as teenagers, my children love coming year after year with friends. Much of Umbria is still unspoiled and the countryside retains an authenticity that some areas have lost due to crowds of tourists.

Unique benefits of the property
Villanova is our little piece of paradise: it's in an idyllic setting in the rolling hills with a view of one of Italy's premier hill towns, Todi. The house is very easy to get to from a number of airports: Perugia, Rome and Pisa to name the main ones. The pool area has plenty of natural shade from the garden's medieval walls and giant oaks. The pool is surrounded by hedges and chestnut fencing so is ideal for families with smaller children. The stylish comfort of the interior makes it a romantic retreat for couples. We have a wonderful cook and housekeeper- in great demand- who has a winning smile and jovial disposition. We are happy to help arrange cooking and babysitting services with her. Our location is a perfect base for touring Umbria and parts of Tuscany.
