The cottage is situated in the small village of Lugnano, about 15km east of Pisa and just across the River Arno from Cascina which has a station with trains for Pisa (about 10-15 mins.) or Florence (45 mins.). A good dual carriageway also passes by Cascina linking Pisa and Florence and is very handy for Pisa Airport. Lucca, a beautiful, well-conserved medieval town, is a pleasant 25 minute drive through the countryside. The sea is about 30-40 mins. from here on good fast roads. 5 minutes away is Uliveto Terme, a spa village, famous for the properties of its fresh spring water with an open air swimming pool and tennis courts in attractive grounds. Nearby is Calci famous for its beautiful charterhouse which is open to tourists and which in certain months of the year hosts open air concerts of classical music. Vicopisano is a typical unspoilt village with its ancient medieval centre and castle originally built on a hill for defence purposes.

Notes on accommodation
Water, electricity, gas for hot water and bed linen and towels are included in the rental price. Gas for central heating is extra and metre read. If guests require the heating we require a deposit of 50€. At the end of your stay we read the metre and settle the difference. The cottage is in a narrow lane so it is not possible to park outside for more than the time necessary to unload cases, children shopping. The car can be parked down in the village car park about 50 metres away.
Accessibility
There are 4 steps up to the front door so the cottage is not normally suitable for wheelchair users although we have had people in wheelchairs who have managed and had a very happy stay, but they had a strong and particularly well-organized carer.
Outside
There is a small north-facing balcony with some garden furniture for taking the sun and enjoying a quiet drink, listening to the cicadas, watching the fire-flies (depending on the season, of course!) and contemplating the hills as the sun goes down.
Coast/Beach
The nearest sandy beaches, in Tirrenia, is 30km away and it takes about 30-40 mins to get there on good fast roads (You don't have to go through Pisa or other built up areas to get there.
Travelling northwards up the coast on the A12 (about 45 mins)we have the beautiful seaside resort of Viareggio which offers the sea, sandy beaches, a beautiful promenade with exclusive shops and, when the sun gets too hot the pinewood for evening strolls, bicycle hire and parks for children.
Travel
Pisa Airport is 15km away, (20 minutes). You take the dual carriageway out of the airport and don't have to go through Pisa itself.
Car hire is highly recommended as public transport is infrequent although we have had people stay without a car.
Distances
Nearby is Calci famous for its beautiful charterhouse which is open to tourists and which in certain months of the year hosts open air concerts of classical music. Cascina, itself, has a long and illustrious tradition for producing wood furniture of high quality and artistry. Vicopisano is a typical unspoilt village with its ancient medieval centre and castle originally built on a hill for defence purposes. Behind the house there are hills where one can take pleasant walks among pine trees.
Further details
There are a few shops in the village for essentials, including food. Otherwise, over the bridge in Cascina, there is a supermarket. There is a highly recommended pizzeria in the village and numerous other restaurants to suit every budget. Horse riding/trekking can be arranged in the vicinity. Bicycles are available if booked in advance.

The cottage is available £420 per week in July and August; £320 in April, May, June and September; and £250 per week for the rest of the year. A deposit of £100 is required to secure booking and the balance 6 weeks before arrival.
