The property, parts of which are hundreds of years old, has recently been sympathetically restored by skilled local artisans. They have worked together to recapture the beauty of this house with its original marble kitchen sink, beamed chestnut ceiling, tiled floors, wooden shutters and traditional stone architraves. At the same time, the electrics and gas central heating have been brought up to modern standards of safety and comfort. The front door opens onto a welcoming kitchen/living area with beamed ceiling, traditional floor tiles and large storage cupboard. Original marble sink, 4-ring gas hob with electric oven, washing machine, fridge/freezer. The double bedroom, with its traditional wooden shutters and floor tiles has a quirky storage cupboard with window. Four-piece shower room with window.

Changeover day
Flexible. In order to allow time to clean the apartment, we ask guests to arrive after 4pm and leave before 10am although we are happy to be flexible if the apartment is not needed for other guests.

Notes on accommodation
The accommodation is suitable for children and is very close to a lovely park (no roads to cross) which has a cafè, restaurant, pizzeria (with very clean toilets!). There is internet access close by and all facilities (including the hospital and a wealth of excellent restaurants) are walking distance.
Accessibility
There is just 1 step to get into the apartment. However, this part of Barga has steep cobbled lanes which may not be suitable for people with mobility problems. It is not possible to drive to the apartment although you can drop off about 50m away.
Outside
Green, leafy park with play area less than a minute's walk away - no roads to cross.
Coast/Beach
Driving time to Viareggio is about 1 hour / 63km. The Cinque Terre is about 2 hours drive.
Golf
Golf Club Garfagnana is about 30 minutes drive away. Very friendly and welcoming club).
Skiing
Careggine, a small resort about 40 minutes drive away, has 5km of slopes and a further 5km of cross country tracks. I am not a skier but you can read more about it by googling ‘Careggine’ and there are some lovely videos on YouTube. There is a much larger, fully equipped resort in Abetone 1 hour. My husband is a very keen skier and would be happy to answer any technical questions!

Travel
Pisa airport 73km / about 1 hour 15 minutes. Car hire not essential although taxis are expensive and nearest train station is a 10 minute drive.
Distances
The apartment is in the historic centre of Barga and about 45 minutes drive from Lucca. The beautiful Garfagnana mountains (the Apuan Alps and the Appenines) are a short drive away 15 mins.

The Garfagnana region has all the charm, culture and history of southern Tuscany while also offering endless opportunities for walking amidst rugged and spectacular mountain scenery.
Lucca - Garfagnana / Barga area Barga is a wonderful medieval town bursting with history, beautiful architecture, galleries, cafés and restaurants. There is a jazz club which offers live music all year round as well as a theatre and summer jazz and opera festivals. Throughout the summer in Barga and surrounding villages there are frequent small outdoor festivals with live music, dancing and local food. The modern part of Barga has a public outdoor pool, a cinema, tennis courts, riding stables, bike hire and, of course, many shops, cafes and restaurants.
An evocative apartment with chestnut-beamed ceilings which is ideally placed for access both to the old and new quarters of Barga.
A 100m walk down the narrow, cobbled Via di Borgo takes you to the edge of the bustling modern centre of Barga. You will pass the ‘rosticceria’ at the edge of the old town which serves excellent roast dishes and the Ristorante Fontana Maggio: a fine pizzeria with adjoining park with children's play area.
Turning uphill from the apartment, you can wind your way through cobbled alleys towards Barga's famous Duomo. 50m from the apartment is Aristo's bar (which, in the summer months, is a melting pot of cultures and impromptu music) and Cafe Cappretz. Barga Jazz, the theatre and several restaurants are all within very easy walking distance.
