Ceriana on a beautiful summer's day.
Ceriana on a beautiful summer's day.
The River: Torrente Armea
The River: Torrente Armea

The village of Ceriana is nestled among the verdant Ligurian hills. The beautiful countryside is perfect for scenic walks and soaking up the Italian rustic lifestyle. Since the village dates back into the medieval ages it is steeped in culture and mystery; musty alleyways and abandoned churches honeycomb the village giving much to explore and discover. Furthermore, running down the valley is a small river with a rustic swimming pool where the locals cool down during hot summer days. The apartment is very central: a second away from authentic restaurants, an artisanal pizzeria, ice cream parlour and pasticceria. Grocers and butchers line the streets with fresh produce grown locally and there is a general store where you can find general provisions. The village is very livily, as it celebrates national and local holidays and traditional affairs with concerts, bands, local cooked food, available to the public in the main square.

Notes on accommodation
Very suitable for children, as there is a small garden underneath the flat and it is a safe distance from a main road. There is also a small square where kids can play and ride their bikes as my children once did.

Accessibility
The property is accessible on foot, there are 3 major public free car parks in the village. The apartment is 150m away.

Outside
There is a small garden underneath the flat.

Coast/Beach
The apartment is 12km to the beach. Sanremo and Arma di Taggia, both about 25 minutes drive, boast hundreds of public and private beaches. These often offer hot showers, sun beds, bars, restaurants and seawater swimming pools.

Golf
There is a golf course in Sanremo 12km away. Sanremo is a beautiful town on the coast of the Italian Riviera, which, itself is only 35km distant from Montecarlo.

Skiing
The maritime alps are 2 hours drive away, there is Monesi and Limone, which are main skiing resorts. Also great to visit in the Summer, where there are lovely green spaces and it is considerably cooler.

Travel
The nearest airport is Nice in France, 45 minutes drive. Genoa, in Italy, is a little farther away at about 3hrs. The village is well served by public transport, a bus every hr or so that goes down to the coast. Renting a car would give you more flexibility and afford you easier access to other villages in the surrounding area.

Distances
9km up from Ceriana there is Bajardo, right up in the mountains, 880m above the sea level. The road stops there and you can see the French Alps. It is full of wonderful, unspoiled and untraveled walks and footpaths. There are also two restaurants and a shop.

Further details
In Ceriana every year at Easter time, there is a great procession, with singing which goes on for 3 days. We have 5 choirs who perform regularly at various Italian events and have been on tour all over Italy and also in the USA. Everyone can sing in Ceriana! There is also a music festival on the 8th of September, which occurs every year and last for 10 days, as it is the Saint Patron`s feast. During the summer months, starting in July, the village council provides entertainment in the main square every week-end with dancing and singing, which is free. The square is equipped with tables and benches and one can purchase food cooked in the square, from local sausages to kebabs, pasta, risotto and chips. Ceriana has many beautiful old churches (33 in total), 'la chiesa vecchia' is from the 11th century. There are also many piazza's, where people can sit and chat, while kids ride their tricycles or skate. There about 1000 inhabitants, during the winter and possibly few more in the Summer. It is a vibrant village, with lots going on.

Owner profile

About the owner
I lived in Ceriana when I was young, my parents still live there and I spend all my holidays in the village, as it's 'home for me'.

Year purchased: 1950's

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
My father had the house built in 1957. The village has 900 inhabitants, it has all the conveniences one needs, three really good grocery shops, one is a delicatessen too, an artisan patisserie, a gelateria, a pizzeria, a restaurant, a pub, a tobacconist, two hairdressers and a post office/news agent. It's a lovely place, quiet and sunny.

Unique benefits of the property
It`s very close to the car park, some 150 mt. away. The flat has a small garden underneath with a table, chairs and an umbrella, where you can enjoy the view and hear the local band playing live music twice a week in the evenings, as their practise room is very close to the flat. The village has no parking spaces outside the houses, as it was built around 900 A.D. by the Roman Empire, who sent their centurions to Ceriana to recover from their battles! The flat has a great view of the mountains, it`s cool in the summer, comparing to the towns on the sea front, as the village is 369 mt. above the sea level.
