The Podere has been beautifully restored in traditional Tuscan construction with extensive use of local materials including stone, chestnut and terracotta. The village itself dates back to the 9th century and is composed of 4 buildings grouped around a central courtyard (with well) on a hill with 360 degree panoramic views. A swimming pool for residents use only has been sited to take maximum advantage of stunning Tuscan views. The apartment is finished to a very high standard with central heating and full air-conditioning, outside boasts a large terrace and garden facing directly towards the hill top town of Volterra ideal for alfresco dining and very child friendly. Both bedrooms have direct access to the terrace via French doors which again maximise views of the town. For next season the adjacent 1 bed apartment will be available for families travelling together. Fabulous location to sample the Tuscan dream.

Changeover day
Changeover on Saturdays in high season. Vacate property by 11.00am - Arrival after 16.00. Other changeover days may be available by arrangement - duration of stay may be negotiable - ie mid-week, weekends etc. (not available during high season)

Notes on accommodation
The apartment is fully heated and air conditioned and is very child/family friendly. Non-smoking. Regrettably no pets allowed.

Accessibility
We regret that the apartment is not suitable for wheelchair users due to the steep, stepped access. 2 private car parking spaces are provided.

Outside
The apartment is complimented by a large landscaped and irrigated garden scented with herbs and lavender. A large terrace allows for alfresco dining and evening relaxation with superb local wines and wonderful views of Tuscany's highest hill top town. No one should miss out on a Tuscan sunset especially as the lights of Volterra come alive.

Coast/Beach
Beaches are 30 mins by car on a main road. One beach of note is the white beach 'Spiaggia Bianca' at Vada, beautiful white sand with turquoise water - well worth a visit.

Golf
One of Italy's best courses 'Castelfalfi' situated in an ancient medieval hamlet is approx 40 mins drive.

Travel
Pisa Airport 55 mins on excellent roads, Volterra 15 mins, San Gimignano 40 mins, Chianti region 40 mins, Siena 60 mins and Florence approx 75 mins. Trains run locally from Pontedera to Florence on a regular basis(recommended during Summer months to avoid traffic). Trains run from Cecina to Rome. Timetables can be confirmed on Trenitalia web site.

Distances
The apartment is placed centrally to all the major attractions of Tuscany and the road network is superb and well signed. Car hire is essential to fully explore the region.

Further details
The Podere is situated on a hill top between the towns of Volterra and Montecatini, both perfectly preserved and rich in history and archaeology, Montecatini with its mining history and Volterra with its Etruscan and Roman ruins. Volterra cannot be discovered in one visit, you will want to return time and time again. Blessed with an abundance of top class restaurants serving local cuisine and hospitality second to none, some are designed with glass floors to showcase excavations of Etruscan and Roman remains. The architecture is stunning and the ambiance both inspiring and secure, children are made to feel very welcome and families made to feel at ease by the locals who live and work in the town. Museums, banks, craft shops specialising in alabaster, designer boutiques all add to the buzz of this ancient town. Sports are catered for with indoor/outdoor pool, tennis court and 5 a side court set in spectacular surroundings. Pisa, Florence, Siena and San Giminano are all easily accessible and demand a visit whilst simply travelling through the Chianti landscape en route, is an experience in itself. Saline di Volterra is a 2-3 min drive from the apartment and facilitates wine shops, hotel, restaurants, supermarket, laundry, bakeries and speciality shops. La Dolce Vita under the Tuscan sun!

Booking direct with owners. 200 euro deposit to secure booking. Balance 8 weeks prior to arrival. 100 euro refundable deposit in lieu of damages. Deposit refunded within 2 weeks of departure.

About the owner
Gary and I live in Belfast with our 2 boys (11 & 8). As a family we love all things Italian and probably should be living there full time. Gary is an Architect and has travelled extensively in Italy from his early student days, I lived and taught in Naples and am fluent in the language (Gary has tried but has enough difficulty with English). We fell in love with Italy individually and then as a family and our boys have fully embraced the 'dolce vita'. We think Le Volpaie is magical and a wonderful place to recharge the batteries - we are very blessed to have this apartment.

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
Whilst we love all things Italian, we specifically love Tuscany. We could go on about the food, the wine, the culture etc but to be honest everything about Tuscany is special, not least, the friendships we have made in Volterra.
