Ognio is a small town nestled in the mountains just 30 min to the Italian Riviera and 15 min to Genova (birthplace of Christopher Colombus). The house has comfortable furniture, wood floors and ceilings on the second floor, 2 bedrooms and a full bath, a washing machine and a pot belly stove for cool nights in the fall and winter months. It is the perfect place for someone looking for serenity and silence. Yet, still has the convenience of getting to beautiful towns, in little time. Artists and writers find it to be a haven. There are breathtaking views from the mountain tops. Lovely walks in the woods, a stroll down the mountain into the village or a relaxing afternoon in the yard are some of the immediate pleasures found here. There is a working (wood burning) pizza oven outside where you can enjoy cooking pizza, lasagna and homemade breads, Italian style. Come experience Italy the old fashion way with all the comforts of home. An amazing vacation the way you want it.

Notes on accommodation
Air-conditioning is not a necessity here due to the cool breeze that comes from the mountains leaving this rustic home a refuge on those hot summer days. In the winter months, it is close enough to the sea-side and its warm winds to keep it temperate.
Children are welcome and safe in this area as the house is situated on a dead end street. There are scooters for their use and a small slide in the yard. The people that you may find on the road are the locals out for a stroll.

Accessibility
Unfortunately, this home is not adapted for wheelchair users. The bathroom is found on the second floor and there is no elevator or ramps to be used.

Outside
The yard is equipped with outdoor furniture, a picnic table and a wood burning pizza oven that allows for wonderful evenings of good food and relax.

Coast/Beach
The Italian Riviera (Chiavari, Portofino, Rapallo, Santa Margherita) are all about 30 min from the house by car. These beaches are on the Mediterranean sea which is beautifully clean, calm water, much warmer than the Atlantic ocean. There are mountains as the back-drop to this picturesque seaside.

Special interest holidays
We have tours available for those of you that are interested in seeing the area without having to figure out how to get around or fight with the language. We speak fluent English and can take you to Roman ruins, medieval towns, the Italian Riviera, wineries, Parmesan cheese factories and much more, all with in 2 hours of your accommodation. We also pick up and drop off at the airport or rent you a car. Please ask for further detail.

Travel
The Genova airport is 40 min, the Milan airports are 1.5 hours away and the Genova Sea Port (where you can find the aquarium, the Pirate boat used for the film 'Pirates' with Walter Mathow, stores and the center of Old Genova) is 25 min by car depending on traffic.

Distances
The village down the road is a 5 min ride by car where you can find bars, restaurants, stores, a bank, post office, church and a park for the kids. Up the road 5 min there is the original village of Ognio where you can still find the church (built in the 1600's) and a lovely trattoria serving all homemade foods and good wine while over looking the surrounding valleys of the nearby towns.

Owner profile

My dad, my kids and me at the local fest

About the owner
I am an American (that came to Europe for a back packing trip for ten months. Thinking that I would be a nice, single woman for the rest of my years, I was snagged by a wild, Italian man whilst minding my own business, as usual) now married to an Italian and living in Italy. I own a B&B in the Emilia Romagna area, I give private tours of the surrounding area and I teach English at a local high school. We have three kids that speak both English and Italian fluently. They have adopted a wee kitten that they care for as one of the family. He follows them around like a puppy dog. We spend our free time at our house in Liguria & enjoy every minute away from the phone, the TV, the computer and all other mechanical products that make us spend time alone and not communicate with each other.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Our Ligurian house has been in my side of the family for over 300 years. My great, great grandfather built it by himself, hiking down the mountain every morning and every afternoon, to fetch a bag a cement each time, then worked all day slapping stone upon stone until he was done, only taking a break for lunch and perhaps a glass of red wine. I have a sense of belonging when I am in this house. I thought it was because it has been part of the family for so long, but others tell me that they feel the same way. There is something truly peaceful about my rustic home. We use it as a vacation home as much as possible and want to share it with others that will love it as much as we do. This will help us with the up keep and allow the house to be used more frequently.

Unique benefits of the property
We especially enjoy the tranquil life on a dead end road, our garden with the pizza oven, the slow moving ways of the small town down the hill, the great restaurant up the hill (Trattoria del Pippo) and the short ride to the seaside (The Italian Riviera, such as Portofino, Rapallo and Santa Margherita) where we can stroll the promenade or take a swim. The hustle and bustle of the city of Genova is only 15 min. from the house and offers lovely shops, the Port, an aquarium, fabulous architecture, great restaurants, discotheques and the history of Christopher Colombus. Anyone who loves the city, but wants the quiet life for the wee hours has the best of both worlds here.
