Further details
Puglia offers a taste of a simple life that has been forgotten in our frenetic times, with an easy going charm that is making this once quiet peninsula a firm favourite for holiday makers. The relaxed way of life here combined with the abundant fresh local food makes a holiday here both calming and memorable.
Ceglie Messapica is a charming small town of white washed houses and narrow streets located in the province of Brindisi, on the edge of the Valle Itria, famous for its Trullis. The captivating landscape here is typical of the area: dry-stone walls, olive groves, vineyards, and woods with ancient oaks.
Puglia is considered one of the best places to eat in Italy by the Italians, and Ceglie Messapica is considered one of the best places to eat in Puglia! There are many restaurants in Ceglie from simple trattoria to Michelin starred affairs. Many of them will offer some version of what is known as 'Cucina Povera', literally 'poor cooking' derived from a time when the residents of this area of Italy had to make do with simple ingredients and transform them into something more than the sum of its parts.
Restaurants and bars, shops supermarkets and banks are all within 5 minutes drive. Riding facilities nearby. Sailboat rental available nearby as well as yacht charter in Taranto. Many local markets. Fascinating festivals to enjoy during the balmy summer evenings. Enchanting Baroque towns and fairy tale trulli dwellings. Tasting sessions at local vineyards where ever more appreciated wines are produced.

Guest comments
We stayed at San Michele in August 11. It's hard to imagine a more perfect base for a holiday in Puglia. The house has been sympathetically renovated to a high standard, offering chic, contemporary furnishings, a beautiful 'proper' sized pool with cool daybeds on which to enjoy a sundowner or two, and en-suites in every bedroom. The centuries old grotto in the grounds was fascinating and although you are in a peaceful spot, the village is just a few minutes drive and offers some of the best gastronomic experiences in Puglia. The owner has furnished this house not as a holiday home, but as a comfortable, stylish retreat where you feel relaxed and ready to chill from the moment you arrive. We explored the region far and wide over two weeks and came to the conclusion that we were staying in the best place, combining sightseeing and beach days with lazy afternoons by the pool and evenings barbecuing fantastic local food. We will be back!
Owner profile
About the owner
My name is Ian Campbell. I am often in Italy for my work and I originally wanted to find a small trullo to restore for myself and family to enjoy quiet holidays together. When I saw this grand house at the end of its long private drive I fell in love immediately, and despite being three times the size of a trullo and probably much more money than I could afford I set my heart on it. Because of its listed status and much bureaucracy I had to wait the best part of a year until the house was finally ours.
One and a half years and much stress and hard work later the huge project to restore the house, un-lived in for thirty years, was completed. Now I consider this my true home, the locals my friends and I delight in being able to share the house with others.
Year purchased: 2005
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I love this area of Italy for its simplicity and friendly, open hearted people. It is no wonder the Italians themselves choose this particular area of Puglia for their own summer holidays: fantastic weather, great fresh local food and produce and a choice of beautiful beaches with sparklingly clear water.
Unique benefits of the property
For me, it is a privilege to own this unique property and I often have to pinch myself to think how lucky I am! I love the sense of history attached to the house and the fact that I am only the present custodian.
How lucky too that we are under five minutes drive to the town if we have forgotten to buy something or need to go to the bank, and yet from the roof terrace it is clear we are really in the country, surrounded by what seems like thousands of olive trees as far as the eye can see.
Our guests have genuinely enjoyed staying in this amazing house, and always comment about the amazing pool and the day beds on which to laze the day away.
