Notes on accommodation
The apartments have gas central heating and full air-conditioning. They are suitable for children as the terraces are secured with cast iron railings and patio doors with wooden shutters.
Accessibility
The apartment is not suitable for the disabled but suitable for the elderly provided they are happy to climb between one to four staircases dependant on which apartment is rented.
Outside
The stunning views of Lake Como are seen from the living room, bedroom and front terraces. The apartments are ideal for anybody looking to be 2 minutes out of town and 2 minutes from the hills and lake. The apartments have secure electric garage parking, entry phones with electronic door systems to ensure total privacy.
Coast/Beach
There are many beaches around Lake Como. The closest beach is in the town of Bellano 5km north of Varenna and also a lovely beach in Lierna 8km south of Varenna. There is a great public lido and beach in Menaggio.
Golf
The Menaggio and Cadenabbia Golf Club (only 20 mins away by ferry across to Menaggio by car), is the second oldest Golf Club in Italy and represents British tradition at its best. Overlooking Lake Como, it is a course combining old-world values with a heritage of golfing culture. The elevated position of the course provides splendid views in all directions. Players can catch glimpses of the lakes and in the distance, the central Alps. At the traffic lights in Menaggio, bear left towards Porleza/Lugano and continue for 4km until you come to a sign on your left, indicating the Golf Club. If you would like to play at the Club; Mid-week daily Green Fee 55 euros, weekends and bank holidays green fee 70 euros x 10 green fees (Mon - Fri) 450 euros x 10 green fees (weekend's and bank holidays) 550 euros, daily buggy hire 36 euros, daily club hire 15 euros.
Skiing
Winter in Varenna - clear blue skies and snow capped mountains make for exceptional scenery. The area is very convenient for skiing in either Italy or Switzerland with resorts such as Madesimo 1 hr 15 mins to the north and the local ski resort of Piani di Bobbio, only 40 mins in the mountains above and behind Varenna. The International jet-set resort of St. Moritz is just 1.5 hours by car and is a delightful car journey up through the Alpine pastures and mountains.
Special interest holidays
Cooking classes - regular cooking lessons are held every Thursday from 11am to 2pm at the restaurant 'Il Caminetto' situated in Perledo, near Varenna. Booking is compulsory, limited seats. 32 euros per lesson plus lunch per person. Please contact owner for website details.
Painting - 'Fresia Studios' offers week-long oil painting workshops at Lake Como, Italy, from May through September with Jerry Fresia as instructor. Classes take place at Villa de Herra, a 17th century villa with beautiful gardens, located directly on the lake in Lenno. Workshops are open to students with any level of painting experience. Classes are held in the studio and en plein-air. Please contact owner for website details.
Travel
Milan Malpensa airport and Orio al Serio Bergamo airport are both approx. 60-70km away. The nearest ferry terminal is in Varenna with direct access to Menaggio and Bellagio. The nearest train station is in Varenna. In one hour you are in Milan or St Moritz. If you are looking to travel around a lot then a car is recommended when staying at our apartments.
Distances
Varenna is just 2km down the hillside. Menaggio is directly across by ferry and takes approx 15 min on the boat. The famous town of Bellagio is just a 10 min ferry ride and well worth it to explore the historic cobbled streets lined with boutiques and shops and enjoy lunch in one of the many cafes in and around the lakeside.
Further details
Varenna may be the most picturesque town on the lake, its steep winding alleys lined with charming homes, flowering balconies and lace-curtained windows. Just above it is the ancient castle where Theodolinda, Queen of the Lombards, is said to have died in the 7th century. Two famed villas to visit here in Varenna are Villa Cipressi, with terraced gardens cascading right down to the shores, and Villa Monastero, a true showcase.
An unusual attraction - nearby Varenna is the shortest river in Italy – and one with most enticing name: Fiumelatte (River of Milk) Leonardo da Vinci was quite perplexed by the river as he and countless others failed to find its source. It runs for only 250 metres and this and the degree of descent give it its white ‘milky’ appearance. Like many hotels and restaurants in the area even this ‘closes’ in the winter - it dries up in the middle of October and reappears suddenly in the second half of March!
Booking notes
There is a final cleaning cost of 70 euros when staying for one week and 90 euros when staying for two weeks with all bed linen and towels included. If staying for two weeks or more, the bed linen and towels will be refreshed after each week. All utility usage such as water, electricity and gas, are included in the rental price. Cot and high chair can be hired for a cost of 25 euros.
