Attractively furnished 1 room apartment with kitchenette and en-suite bathroom, suitable for couple with/without a child in the enchanting baroque centre. It is on the ground floor of a 2 storey house built over 200 years ago. Ortigia is in the oldest part of Siracusa inhabited by the Corinthians in 734 BC, it was the most important colony of Magna Grecia. It is an island about 1600 metres long and 800 wide joined to the mainland by 3 bridges. The whole of Siracusa emanates an enormous fascination with its ancient monuments in various parts of the city. Each spring, Greek tragedies are performed at sunset in the ancient Greek theatre. There are lovely beaches on Ortigia and a ferry service provides a short trip across the bay where there are other famous bathing resorts. Siracusa has a good year round sub-tropical climate. The Sicilian cuisine is very good. There are many places of archaelogical and cultural importance nearby ie. Noto, a baroque jewel, Ragusa and Modica.

Small studio apartment completely renovated and restored to a high standard covering 12sq.m. There is a bed settee with a pull out bed underneath creating 2 beds and a tiled and well fitted bathroom with large shower, hand basin and lavatory. The tiled small kitchenette has a built in marble work top with small sink, refrigerator with deep freeze, combi/microwave oven and electric induction hot plate. Satellite Television, and Internet connection. Bedlinen, towels and weekly towel change included. The studio apartment is recommended by Rough Guide for Sicily. |

Notes on accommodation
Central heating and air-conditioning in Unit l.
Unit 2 has electric heater and ceiling fan for summer.
There is an efficient and inexpensive laundry very near the apartment. Guests are asked to kindly leave the kitchen in order and to report any damage or breakages.
Unit l and studio 2 can be rented independently but if both booked together sleeping 5 max there is a weekly reduction of 25% on the total rental.
Coast/Beach
2 minute walk to the sea front. 10 minutes walk to the nearest beach and a 15 minute ferry service to the other side of the bay where there are more sandy beaches and many other famous bathing resorts within an hour drive. The nature reserve of Vendicari about 45 minutes south of Siracusa is one of the most uncontaminated corners of Sicily with beautiful limpid water and unspoilt beaches where swimming is permitted.
Special interest holidays
Greek Tragedies are enacted in the ancient Greek Theatre which is situated in the Archeological Park in Siracusa from May until 16th June 2005. They begin at sunset and one such tragedy was specifically written for this venue. The owner can provide full details and obtain tickets.
Travel
Catania - Fontanarossa airport 60 kms/40 minute drive to Siracusa. Bus and car hire services are provided at the airport as well as a moderately priced taxi service.
Distances
The beautiful baroque town of Noto is approximately a 30 minute drive south and also nearby is Ragusa. The Archeological park is within walking distance. Mount Etna is approximately one hour north and from there it is a short distance to Taormina.
Further details
Supermarket, shops and open market for fish, meat, fruit, vegetables etc all within a short walking distance from the apartment. Efficient and inexpensive laundry very near the apartment. The Auditorium, 30 metres from Casa Giulietta is the beautiful de-consecrated church of St Peter which goes back to the 4th century, where jazz and classical concerts are held. One of the most famous Puppet theatres in Sicily is on Ortigia. There are boat trips up the mouth of the river Ciane a nature reserve, just south of Siracusa, where one can see papyrus growing in the wild, the only place in Europe. Boat trips can be arranged to see the surrounding coast line and visit the various grottoes with time to swim if wished. Excursions to Etna can be arranged from Siracusa. The resident English/SA owner is willing to give help or information if needed.
