Romantic Round Tower with Spectacular Views and Stunning Pool
Sleeps 4 (2 Bedrooms)
|
|
La Torre della Palazzina is a beautiful centuries old circular watchtower. Set in the hills of south-eastern Tuscany in its own two acres of land with a stunning swimming pool, it has really spectacular views over towering majestic cypress trees to the Umbrian hills on the other side of the Niccone valley. The restoration of the Tower, which is listed as a building of special historical interest, has hardly altered the original 15th century outside appearance at all. However, the three interior floors, which still retain their ancient wooden beams and terracotta tiles, have been ingeniously altered to provide modern and comfortable accommodation for four people all the year round. The location of La Torre della Palazzina, nestling under the battlements of an ancient castle, is the very stuff of dreams. Above all else life meanders at a gentle and leisurely pace here and it really is a special place to stay at any time of the year.

Notes on accommodation
The somewhat hazardous style of the windows, the staircases and the garden terraces with their stone steps make La Torre a touch precarious for children and so the owners have stipulated that no children under the age of 16 are allowed.

Outside
Immediately outside the Tower there is a paved outdoor terrace with fabulous views, that has stylish wooden garden furniture, sun umbrella and barbecue where you can dine, drink, doze and dream! The 6 x 12 metre swimming pool with Roman steps is situated in a dramatic position on a terrace up and behind the Tower with more chairs, loungers, tables and sun umbrellas. The pool design allows one to laze indolently on the Roman steps or stand on a small ledge all around the pool and gaze at the stupendous views whilst immersed in the warm water! This really is a pool with a view! The 2 acre garden contains vines, olives trees and a mass of lavender, rosemary, broom, honeysuckle, jasmine and other flowering bushes and leads directly into some of the loveliest country walks in the valley.
Coast/Beach
It is about a 2 hour drive to either the east or the west coast of Italy. Lago Trasimeno, the largest lake in the Italian peninsular, is a 20 minute drive from La Torre. Here there are beaches, wind surfing and other aquatic opportunities for guest to enjoy. There are ferries to the islands on the lake where you can explore the spot that St Francis spent time fasting in 1211 and also where the very first plane flew! Restaurants here will allow you to enjoy the local fish from the lake.
Golf
There are 3 golf courses within a 40 minute drive from La Torre della Palazzina and details can be provided on request
Skiing
We ski in the Dolomites from our home, but that is a 5 hour drive, so we can hardly describe La Torre as a ski chalet!
Special interest holidays
If you want to really explore this magical part of Italy the owners of La Torre can show you not only some of the historic towns of Tuscany and Umbria, but also places far from the madding crowds that the guidebooks scarcely mention and where others seldom venture, including an amzing tour of Hannibal’s bloody battle at Lago Trasimeno. All of which will give you an unique perspective of Italy. Please just ask for details.
Travel
Whatever your mode of travel to Italy might be you will definitely need a car while staying here. While La Torre is not secluded, it is not comfortable walking distances to the shops. The lack of your own transport will certainly deny you the opportunity to visit all the magical sights that the area has to offer, quite apart from making shopping a chore rather than an exciting adventure.
Distances
You are right in the heart of cultural Italy here and are spoilt with choice of places to visit ~ Sansepolcro, Cortona, Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Lago Trasimeno, Spoleto, Spello and Montepulciano are all within an hours drive. Siena, Florence, Pisa, and Rome are also within easy reach by car or train. The local villages of the Niccone valley with their shops and restaurants are all within a 15 minute drive of your front drive.
Further details
The owners of La Torre are a British couple that live in the neighbouring farmhouse and they will normally be there to welcome you on arrival. If required they can provide advice and assistance during your stay, or alternatively they can remain totally unobtrusive and discreet! They do provide a truly comprehensive house book with a mass of information on the local area which many guests have found makes their own guidebooks almost redundant. Central heating and log fires make this unique property a perfect retreat for romantic winter breaks as well as those indulgent lazy summer ones. If requested at the time of booking a meal with wine can be prepared for your first evening.
