Wisteria Cottage is a 200-year old traditional Italian home in a tranquil village location close to the elegant spa town of Acqui Terme. It has considerable character with exposed stone walls, terracotta tiles and beamed ceilings. It was completely and sympathetically refurbished in 2008, including a new kitchen and bathrooms. The three spacious double bedrooms comfortably sleep 6, but we have also found it to be very popular with couples. Wisteria Cottage is the perfect place for getting away from it all. An excellent base for exploring the area and enjoying world-class Piedmontese cuisine and wine, although a car will be essential. The kitchen is well supplied for those who like to cook and local Italian cookery books are also available. The front garden is sunny all day a pleasant and relaxing place to sit and enjoy a glass of local wine, while the rear garden has shadey spots to relax in during the heat of the day.

Special interest holidays
Wisteria Cottage situated in the southern Piedmontese wine producing region is an ideal base for wine tourism. Sessame village is renowned for its Brachetto wines in particular, and is on the Asti 'wine road'. The area is at the heart of the great moscato district centred on the town of Canelli. Loazzolo dessert wine, made only in the village of that name, is twenty minutes away. Wine tours are available, tailored to your needs. Close to Acqui Terme a Spa town with full associated health and beauty facilities. Food and wine festivals take place more or less throughout the year, celebrating not just great wines but world class Piedmontese cuisine, based on local products. These range in scale from the biennial International Cheese Festival at Bra to the local village party. Lovers of pageantry and costume can enjoy events such as the Asti Palio (older than Siena's), the Cassine medieval festival and the breathtaking Canelli Assedio, re-enacting the seige of 1613.

Fly to Genoa or Turin, approximately one and half hours away, or Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate and Milan Bergamo, approximately two hours away. During the winter there is a service to Cuneo, approximately one and a half hours away. Distances
Sessame is approx 1½ hour to the major cities of Turin and Genoa. Turin was the home of the Savoy dynasty and is one of the great cities of baroque architecture. Genoa's renovated old port area is a major tourist attraction. Locally the elegant Spa town of Acqui Terme is a 15 minute drive. Asti, not just famous for its sparkling wine, is about forty minutes drive. While for the wine enthusiast, Barolo and Barbaresco are approx 45 minutes away.

Further details
Sessame has its own restaurant, cafe and post office. The small town of Bistagno is within a ten minute drive of the cottage and has banks, shops, restaurants and a small supermarket. On the outskirts of Acqui Terme there is a large supermarket while the centre of the town has shops which appeal to all ages, wonderful cafes and many restaurants. Other small villages can all be found within a five minute drive of the cottage each with its own piece of history from walled villages to those with defence towers and castles. Many are famous for their patisseries, salamis and individual restaurants. Every village has wine producing families and you can buy direct. Acqui Terme also has two swimming pools an indoor pool open from September to May and a large outdoor pool open from June until the end of August. There is a smaller outdoor pool in the next village, just 5 minutes drive from the cottage, also open from June until the end of August. The small town of Nizza Monferrato approx 20 minutes drive has two outdoor pools. Most of the larger villages boast their own swimming pools which are open to the public between June and the beginning of September. At certain times it is possible to visit the cathedral wine cellars which are found beneath the streets of Canelli. Which is another small town with a wealth of history. Markets are held in most towns. Canelli on Tuesdays and Fridays. Nizza on Fridays and the antique market is held the third Sunday of each month. Acqui Term market is held on Thursdays.

Owner profile

About the owner
We have just returned to live in the UK after living in Italy for 4 years, so that our younger two sons could finish their six form education in the UK. We still have our home a lovely old Cascina or farmhouse, which is about 15 minutes drive from Wisteria Cottage. We moved to this area of Italy because it was so peaceful, has lovely scenery, good food and wine. A complete change from living on the outskirts of a large city. When we moved we decided to do something different and so we have vineyards and now produce our own wine.

Year purchased: 2007

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought Wisteria cottage as a place where our friends and family could come and stay whilst we continued working on our farmhouse. We also decided to rent the cottage and so completely refurbished it to a high standard to give comfortable and stylish accomodation yet retain as much of the character of the cottage as possible. We choose a village location so that visitors could immerse themselves in true Italy.

Unique benefits of the property
Wisteria cottage sits in the village of Sessame under the watchful eye of an ancient ruined castle. Wisteria cottage is a spacious cottage with good sized front and rear gardens allowing space to sit and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. There are pleasant walks around the area which is surounded by vineyards and small farms which produce their own wine and other produce. A place to enjoy as much or as little as you want to do before returning home refreshed and relaxed. Our guests comment on how well they sleep and how they could just sit, enjoy a glass of wine and the peace without going anywhere.
