Set in the beautiful mountainous northwest corner of Tuscany, between the historic city of Barga and village of Coreglia Antelminelli, Grifoglia is situated on 20 acres of sunny hillside overlooking the mountains that surround the Ania River. The area is ideal for walking and hiking, or for those who would simply enjoy a fresh view of Tuscany. The setting through Summer and late fall is lush green. Winter and Spring reveal vast mountain vistas, terraced hillsides, and clear hiking trails. In the spring and fall the forests are filled with the pungent porcini mushrooms for which the area is famous, and in the fall the chestnut trees yield numerous varieties of the chestnuts that are used in many delicious local specialties. Grifoglia is centrally located, about 1-1.5 hours from the cities of Florence and Pisa, or the coast at Viareggio, and 1 hour north of Lucca, and offers opportunities for numerous day trips to historic hill towns or the beautiful coastal region of Cinque Terre.

Changeover day
We work within a Saturday to Saturday time frame but can be flexible within the Saturday to Saturday framework. Check in is generally after 2pm and checkout by 11am.

The Cantina Apartment (2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4)

At the front, ground level of the farmhouse, an ample two bedroom, two bath, apartment. The roomy bedrooms each have full or two twin beds with cast iron frames. The front bedroom has a lovely view of the mountains. The fully tiled baths have showers. The kitchenette has solid chestnut wood cabinetry with a granite work surface with a 4 hob cook top, refrigerator, and is furnished with dishware, glasses and tableware for 6. There is a solid chestnut wood dining table which will seat 6. There is a divan, which converts to a comfortable sleeper sofa, and footrest in the large sitting area. The coolness of the semi-in-ground level is much appreciated in Summer, yet there are windows in each room for light. There is also a spacious private sitting area outdoors with granite table and cast iron seating with umbrellas for shade. |

Notes on accommodation
There is a full kitchen garden and we provide a welcome basket of seasonal fruits and vegetables and replenishment as needed throughout the stay. Our water comes from a pristine mountain spring so there is no need to buy drinking water. The kitchens have all cookware and utensils and the basics, coffee, tea, sugar, salt pepper, oil and vinegar. All linens are provided including pool towels. There is a woodburning pizza oven which we use throughout the season and can also be used for roasting. The property is ideal for children.
Outside
The main property is sloping, terraced lawn and field, surrounded by forest and mountains for a quiet and secluded ambiance. The fenced shared pool is 10 x 4 metres and 1 metre 20 deep. There are cushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas.
Coast/Beach
The Versilia Coast, which stretches from Viareggio to Massa Carrara, is an hour to an hour and a half away. It can be reached down the main road through Lucca or via the mountain road through the famous marble mountains. The spectacular coast at Cinque Terre is also about n hour and a half from Grifoglia. There are many suggested itineraries to take advantage of for day trips.
Travel
The nearest airports include Pisa and Florence, both at about an hour and a half driving distance. A hire car is essential and readily available at either airport.
Distances
The beautiful and historic city of Lucca is less than an hour away. The hilltop village of Coreglia Antelminelli, at 2.5 miles, can be reached by car in about 10 minutes or on foot along the scenic main road or by one of many walking trails. The hilltop city of Barga, renowned for its cathedral and Summer music festivals is 5.5 miles, 15 minutes by car, down the main road which affords spectacular panoramic views of the local mountain ranges.

Guest comments
We spent two weeks in the self contained apartment at Grifoglia and had an amazing, relaxing, rejuvenating holiday. The apartment was invitingly cool after a day under the Tuscan sun. There was a very welcome basket of goodies awaiting us upon arrival including homemade jams, fruit bread and essentials such as tea, and coffee. The swimming pool must have one of the prettiest outlooks of anywhere in the world, surrounded by chestnut forests and views of the spectacular Apuane mountains in the distance.
Our hosts were delightful, helpful, friendly and good to have around to ask various questions and make us feel totally at ease. We were invited to help make traditional Neopolitan pizzas, which were cooked in a real pizza oven outside. This delightful experience was one we will all remember.
We stayed in the 'barn' although there were other rentals available. The barn was beautifully restored into an apartment. Simple decorations but high quality. We would love to return.
