'Villa Avogadro' is situated on the plateau close to Orvieto, a beautiful little town in Umbria, the so-called "green heart of Italy", just between Rome and Florence, near the lakes, not so far from the sea. Orvieto, of Etruscan origin and then important centre in the Middle Age and Renaissance, owns one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedral in Italy, side by side with a quantity of churches, monuments and buildings that made of Orvieto one of the most characteristic place to visit in Italy. The area is also important for wine, oil, cheese and sausages production. The villa is just 10km far from the centre (but just 400m from the little village of Canale). In the middle of its own park, it is in a very peaceful location, looking all around vineyards, olives trees, the sweet hills of Umbria. Completely restored 25 years ago and recently renewed, with its warm and spacious rooms, and the antique furniture, it looks as the noble country residence it is. Private pool.

Notes on accommodation
The villa is recommended to groups of friends or large families looking for peace and relax.
Just between Rome and Florence, near Siena, Todi, Perugia, etc., if you want to enjoy together nature, relax, history, art, gastronomy, this the place you must be.
Children are welcome but they have to take care of the furniture. Otherwise, they'll have a lot of space to enjoy, indoor and outdoor: the rooms are very spacious, and you can transform the music room in a cinema or in a disco with a little effort.
Pets: dogs could be considered, but we have already 4 big dogs in the property: they live in a closed space, but it's not recommended to leave your pet free in the garden. No cats (because of the furniture).
All the bedrooms are on the 1st floor: stairs are easy and comfortable, but unlikely not for wheelchairs users.

Accessibility
I'm sorry, the villa is not suitable for wheelchairs users.

Outside
There is a beautiful garden all around the villa, with ancient big trees and the lawn. From the house and the garden, you'll look over the hills, the vineyards, the olive trees. In the middle of the garden, a private swimming pool, 12m x 6m, 150cm height. Tables and chairs for 24 people. Deckchairs. Barbecue.

Coast/Beach
The Tyrrhenian Coast is 100-110km far.

Special interest holidays
We can organise yoga, macrobiotic cooking, painting, Italian classes, walking and biking tours in the surrounding.

Travel
Nearest airport: Rome (Fiumicino or Ciampino).
Car hire is recommended, as it's quite difficult in Umbria to reach small but interesting towns by public transports.
Train from Rome to Florence stops in Orvieto.

Further details
In the small village of Canale, just 400m from the Villa, there is a little cafe, that sells local and national newspapers. There is a small supermarket with fresh milk, bread, etc, a butcher, a pizzeria and a hair stylist.
In Orvieto Scalo (8km from the Villa), you'll find the big supermarkets.
In Orvieto Centre there are many shops of course: fashion, antiques, ceramics, artcrafts, typical foods (cheese, sausages, wine, oil...), and every kind of restaurant (typical trattorie, pizzerie, nouvelle cuisine, Chinese...)
Banks are in Orvieto Scalo and in the Centre.
Railway station is in Orvieto Scalo, then a little bus connects with Canale 4 times per day.
From the railway station, a funicular will bring you in the Centre.
Umbria is a paradise for everybody who loves art, history, culture, as well as nature.
Every small village offers you something to discover.
It' s a beautiful area also for biking and horse riding.

Guest comments
Ilaria; I cannot tell you how perfect the villa was for us and what an absolutely wonderful time we had. No one could imagine a more perfect place. Space just right, kitchen terrific... I feel so fortunate that I happened on you on the Internet by chance. This was the happiest and most memorable vacation I can imagine, ever.

...I would love nothing better than to come back... I loved the villa, my room (the corner one with bookcases), Orvieto, Umbria and everything we saw and did. Of course our being all together made it so special. But I had such a wonderful feeling of peace and happiness there I'd love to re-live even a portion of it. Meanwhile, and I mean this, Chicago is not Canale but it is a great and beautiful city and while not as
large as the villa, I could accommodate all 5 Canaevas in reasonable comfort right in the heart of the city. Lake Michigan is outside my windows. I would not offer if I were not sincere. Fondly, A.

House swap
House swap considered. We're a family of 5 (children of 15, 12 and 9), so we need min. a 5 people accommodation, but we love to travel with another family of friends (5 people too, 3 children of 16, 11 and 8), so max. 10-12 people.

Owner profile

About the owner
I'm 43, with 3 children of 17, 14 and 11 years old. My family comes from the North of Italy, but I grow in Rome, then I chose to live in Umbria for 10 years with my children, finally I live in Paris now. We travelled a lot since I was a little girl, so I spent at least one month per year abroad. I studied architecture at University, but I work as a music producer and manager since 15 years. I'm a non-professional photographer too.

Year purchased: 2001

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Umbria is in my opinion one of the most beautiful region in Italy ("the green heart of Italy"). Sweet hills, a perfect climate, just in the centre of the Country, well connected by railway and highway to Rome and Florence and so to the rest....in less than 1 hour you're in Rome, in 1 h 30' in Florence, but in 1 h you're swimming into the Tirrenean Sea or skiing in the Appennini too....Orvieto is a beautiful little town, and its long history (since Aetruscan Age) it's written in its monuments and masterpieces of art....the Duomo, that dominates the historical centre, is the most beautiful Gothic Cathedral of Italy. Here, all is peace and harmony...you find time to open your mind to thousands of ideas...and to meet a lot of friends coming from all the world that chose they too to live here.

Unique benefits of the property
I full in love with my house at the first sight. Villa Avogadro is not a typical country house....it's more elegant and more spacious and more brightly than other houses here...and you feel at home also if it's the first time you visit it. It's not in the centre of Orvieto, but at the right distance, 10 min by car. And just 400 mt from the nearest little village of Canale, so not a drama if you miss the bread at 8 o'clock in the eve. The park is beautiful, 8000sq.m are the right dimension to be maintained as a garden. All the rooms of the house (the bathrooms too) have a romantic view on the hills and the vineyards and olive trees all around. Wide lounges at the ground floor, with a cinema and music room, a big traditional kitchen where to have lunches with friends near to the fire.
