Notes on accommodation
The apartment has an L-shaped balcony which extends all around the length of the flat; an ideal place to relax with a glass or two of wine on balmy summer evenings.
Many of the neighbours in this and the mini apartment block across the way are known to us and are always happy to assist our guests in any way they can. There are also some new younger families in these two blocks with young children; last summer several of our guests mentioned that their children made friends with some of the children in the apartment block soon after arrival and were often invited to go and play in the little children’s playground at the end of the close.
There is a small private parking area just outside the apartment block for local residents. You will be entitled to park there providing you avoid the disabled spaces in yellow and do not block the entrance to to the neighbours’ garages.
The flat is within walking distance of cafes, shops, supermarkets, and excellent low cost restaurants.

Amenities/Facilities provided

Accessibility
The apartment is within easy reach of many historical wonders. This region is steeped in history and culture all around. Formia itself is a beautiful chic Italian town surrounded on three sides by the spectacular Aurunci Hills and overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Within driving distance of Formia are Naples, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Scauri, Gaeta and Sperlonga. Cicero's tomb and Minturno's spectacular Roman Theatre are just a short drive away as is the famous Roman Aqueduct.

Outside
At certain times of year we can offer our guests free or very low cost access to a beautiful private beach resort attached to a luxury Hotel just a short walk away from the apartment (see photos). Here you would receive use of the hotel’s beach, which is cleaned daily, sun loungers and / or deck chairs and beach side bar. Elegant dining facilities on the beach terrace are available if desired at a very reasonable cost. There is a life guard on the beach all day so children are safe when they swim in the sea but do read our Beach and Pool Health and Safety sheets. If you would like to explore beaches further afield, we recommend that you visit Sperlonga. Sperlonga’s long, sandy beach is renowned in Italy as one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the country. If you feel like treating yourself to a day of opulent luxury, then we can arrange for you spend one or more days in a luxury resort on this very beach. Believe me this is as close as it gets to Heaven.

Coast/Beach
The local beach is just a short walk away from the apartment. This is free and available to guests at any time of year. However, we advise guests to go to private beaches rather than public ones as they are cleaned daily and the life guard facility makes them safer for children. In 2008 we can offer our guests one or more days at a beautiful private beach resort at no extra cost.

Skiing
If you visit this area in winter you could go to the Abruzzo mountains in Roccaraso for a day or more and try your hand at skiing or snowboarding. We would be happy to arrange a day's skiing at Roccaraso for anyone who would like to visit Formia in the winter months.

Special interest holidays
In the summer Formia never sleeps: the magnificent Roman Theatre at Minturnae puts on open air operatic and theatrical productions throughout the summer months. Just a short walk from the Sperlonga beach resorts mentioned above, the open air summer theatre, provides entertainment for the entire summer season for people of all ages: Opera, Neapolitan songs, Classical Concerts, Pop and Rock Concerts, Traditional Folk Dancers and more. If you want to do more than just observe and admire, then Opera enthusiasts could have singing lessons with a professional opera singer in the local area. A former guest who had lessons with this opera singer has recently won two Music Festivals in the UK with the song that they worked on together last summer.

Travel
The nearest airports are in Rome and Naples. Take the airport bus to the station then take a train to Formia station. Once in Formia take a bus or a taxi to the flat. For first timers it may be best to take a taxi. Obviously you could hire a car from the airport if you prefer. If you intend to explore the area a hire car would certainly be your best option.

Distances
The aqua park in the nearby town of Itri is a must for children and parents alike; its three waterslides and two large pools surrounded by the spectacular views of the Itri hills, will provide you with a day out that you will treasure forever. The port in Formia is just 1 Km. from the apartment and from there you can take a ferry or jetfoil to the Pontine islands of Ponza and Ventotene, where the sea water is a beautiful deep blue and there are caves and grottos to explore all around.

Further details
You may well ask yourself: ‘Why Italy? There are beaches, water parks and water-skiing everywhere? So why bother with Italy at all?’ I suppose what always made holidays in this part of Italy really special for me, is that even if I chose not to visit Pompeii or Montecassino or Rome or Minturnae, I could not stop the history and culture of this ancient part of Europe from having some impact on me and, more importantly on my children. Italy is known world wide as one of the ‘cradles of civilization’; even if you choose not to spend your time sightseeing you cannot fail but be overwhelmed with the history and culture all around you in this unique corner of Italy. When our children were younger we didn’t spend much time visiting roman ruins in the southern Italian summer heat, but being surrounded by these and other historical wonders was always very special. It is a daunting experience when you are casually window shopping in Formia Centro and you stumble on the remains of a Roman tower, or when you are driving to the Aqua Park in Itri and suddenly you find you are driving past Cicero’s tomb or if you go to the Market in Sessa and you just happen to find a parking space opposite the magnificent Etruscan / Roman Theatre – quite by chance, not an experience you can have in many other European countries. What better early memory can you give your children than staying in a flat ‘just off the Appian Way’ or driving past a gigantic Roman Aqueduct on the way to the pool or having a picnic lunch in the Ancient Roman town of Minturnae, perched on the steps of the Teatro Romano?
You may also ask yourself why Formia and why now? What makes this an area of Italy still worth visiting today is that this region has not yet been totally transformed by ‘progress’ as many others have so it is still 'the real Italy' as it all was in the past and it is still affordable. But for how long? Places like this are few and far between in modern Italy so best to visit it now.

Booking notes
We are very flexible with regard to booking procedures. However we do require a damage and security deposit which is returned in full when you vacate the apartment.

Guest comments
"What a wonderful time we had exploring Italy! We returned yesterday from our 3 week adventure and have spent much conversation reflecting on everything we did. I can honestly tell you that the experiences we had in Formia were the richest and most authentic of our entire trip. Joan and I are also teachers and we were welcomed so warmly by your friends in Sessa. Ben and Mary really enjoyed this rare and valuable experience and we're very grateful to you for helping us make the connection. "

"Thank you so much for arranging such a wonderful week for us. I didn't realise when we first booked this apartment that you would do so much for us. We really appreciated the beach bookings and the fantastic holiday programme you arranged for us.
Please let us know how we can tell other people about this as it is a very special experience and they will not realise just how much they will receive just by reading the internet advertisement. Thank you again - Ana and Pete
