Casa Bianca from the Vineyard
|
|
Casa Bianca is a wonderful place for a large family or group of friends to enjoy a holiday together. It offers space, peace, and seclusion but is only a 20 minute drive from Umbertide. Located on Monte Corona at about 600m above the medieval Castello di Santa Giuliana, breezes mitigate the intense heat of high summer. Behind the house, wooded hillsides rise to a 16th century monastery while in front there are uninterrupted views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Walking tracks cover the hillsides and birdwatchers and other naturalists can enjoy the abundant wildlife. More energetic guests may be tempted to climb the 2 nearest mountains (Monte Tezio 961m and Monte Acuto 926m.) The 2 storey house has a cool interior with white walls, attractive arches, exposed beams, restrained colour schemes and original art. Children and adults can enjoy ball games on the level meadow beside the house as an alternative to the pool or just relaxing on one of the terraces.

Accessibility
Although on a hillside, once at the house the ground is level and there is no need to negotiate steps unless accessing the pool which is on a lower terrace. The ground floor Bedroom 5 and en-suite bathroom are accessed directly from the upper terrace with both shaded and open dining and lounging areas.
Outside
Several cars may park on the drive. A vegetable garden and vineyard provide seasonal produce. The eastern French windows open to a separate patio area with table and chairs, access to the vineyard and steps to the drive. The upper south facing patio with wheeled cushioned recliners, dining and small tables, chairs, and sun umbrella is partly covered by a wisteria pergola for shade. Shallow steps descend to the pool terrace. The unheated pool (available June - September) measures 12x6m with deep end and diving board. At the west end of the house is an outdoor barbecue and large level grassed area suitable for outdoor games. A path leads into the surrounding woods. The site has several umbrella pines, cypress, cherry, chestnut and olive trees which add to it's attraction. Potted plants include oleander, jasmine, plumbago, geraniums and lemon trees. Southern terraces and the interior 1st floor are paved with travertine marble. A covered loggia for drying clothes is at 1st floor level.
Coast/Beach
This is not a good base for Tuscan or Adriatic coasts, both about 2.5 hours away.

There are also spectacular local pageants and festivals in the smaller hill towns such as the Gubbio Candle Race (May), the Spello 'Infiorita' (June), the Whit Sunday celebrations in Orvieto and the Perugia Jazz Festival (July). Food festivals dominate the later summer months. Excellent music and opera is characteristic of the area. The Umbertide tourist office off the main square is a good source of information.
