Coast/Beach
Zambrone Marina is the nearest of many beaches in the area and is only two minutes away by car. Here you will find plenty of free parking. Beyond the promenade the long white sandy beach leads down to the blue-green ocean with rocky coves and picturesque cliffs. The beaches in this area are remarkable in that plenty of space is always available even in the peak season. Boats, pedalos and jet skis are available for hire in the summer season. There are a number of bars and restaurants.
Golf
Villa Feudo Montalto Golf Club has a nine hole course and is approximately a 30 minute drive away, where restaurant, bar and swimming pool facilities are available.
Travel
Zambrone is around 50km and 40 minutes from the airport of Lamezia, with direct flights from many international destinations, including Stansted in the UK. Also there are internal flights from Rome, Milan and Pisa, providing international links to and from other airports.
The rail links within Italy are both cheap and reliable, enabling travel to and from Naples, Rome and beyond. These link up with the local network, which runs along the coast down to Reggio di Calabria and onwards to Sicily.
Distances
The town of Zambrone is a 3 minute drive and within a 10 minute drive can be found the ancient town of Tropea, without doubt the prettiest town on Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast. Travelling south along the coast you meet Capo Vaticano and onwards to Scilla, Reggio di Calabria and the ferry to Sicily in just over 2 hours. Going north on the coast you pass through Briatico and on to Pizzo, which is around 20 minutes away. Through Lamezia you can reach Sila National Park with its winter ski resorts.
Further details
The local area is mainly served by the town of Zambrone, which has a variety of shops where all of your daily requirements can be met, whether it be fresh produce or cash from the ATM. Along the coast there are many towns and villages all with their own range and variety of shops, serving the freshest of fruit and vegetables, together with local wines and delicacies such as the spicy salami known as nduja.
As you would expect there are many, bars, restaurants and gelaterias all offering tremendous value as your euro goes a lot further here than the rest of Italy.
10 minutes south is Tropea, the main town of the area is built on the top of a cliff and from many of the vantage points you can look out and see the active volcano on the isand of Stromboli. There are several beaches and a port from where you can take a day trip around the Aeolean islands. Take time and study the narrow cobbled lined streets, sit out on the pavement of one of the many bars and watch as the locals take their evening passeggiata. You may be able to listen to one of the many outside concerts held in the squares including the jazz festival held every September.
Should you wish to combine a beach and sailing holiday then Sunsail start their operation in the port of Tropea from summer 2008.
Inland the interior of Calabria is dominated by the Sila and the Aspromonte National Parks. Here you can see beautiful lakes and luscious forests in which there are wolves, golden eagles, eagle owls and the rare Bonelli’s eagle. Take a visit and experience small villages with the local women still dressed in their black traditional clothes. Visit the area around San Giovanni in the winter and you could find full skiing facilities.
